UPGRADE IDEA (for a Sharpener I just bought):

Assuming you mean 30 degrees per side, 60 inclusive. It certainly could be but that is not desirable unless you are cutting (milling) brass or similar. If you have an edge that obtuse you should correct it.

It cuts paper. Sure, maybe it has a burr ... but it's the way they come from the factory. Who knows, maybe ~ 25°
I'm certainly not capable of judging with my eyes...but just look at the reference image and visualize the tangent.

BTW ... if you're a MacOS user ... the ° symbol is: OPT + SHIFT + 8

Any reason to actually use strops that fit into the fixed angle sharpener..?
I can only say for myself.
I use them on my guided sharpening system because I have control on stropping angle.
By the way, I usually increase the angle for 2 or 2.5 degrees when stropping on my guided system.
For example, if I sharpen at 17 degrees I increase the angle to 19 or 19.5 degrees when stropping.
Don't ask me why. Most folks here would not understand.

As I recall, Knife Grinders, Australia, does (or did, I was told the gentleman passed away) that, but increases the angle by only a fraction of degree, the exact value depending on the type of steel. It has to do with an elaborate system for deburring.

Only my own opinion:
it's about leather thickness, softness and how long fibers it has (I use strops on flesh side).
My guided system strops are very thin (less then 1mm) and they have short fibers so there is not enough wrap-arround if I strop at the same angle as I sharpen.

Can you upload pictures of just the Hapstone R2 Opti clamps ..?

Especially if you're suggesting that I replace the clamps that come with that rig.

(BTW, what's the name of this setup..? And what is a reasonable price for the unit..?)

You can just google them, apparently you have going from your later posts. It is the same unit as the one you posted that you got from Amazon, except I got mine from Aliexpress a bit over a year ago and upgraded the clamps and have a few 3d printed upgrades. You can see it all in the TooHR #3 thread posted earlier in the thread.

Just a report from using that kit which I got for all of $129 !!! So ... all of $30 more than I paid for that freaking cheap ass Lansky setup (which isn't a dig at it's efficacy, but just the relationship between it's cost to mfr vs. what the product feels like). And I am ELATED with the quality of it. I just cannot fathom something being sufficiently "better" to justify the massive price-jump into the TS-Prof, etc.

Yes, there are MINUTE criticisms I could levy (eg, the 'out of service' hook is impractically short and impossible to even engage). But over all the quality especially for the price seems impossible to beat from everything I've researched. And I spent a few hours trawling Alibaba, Amazon, eBay, etc. I hope that helps others who are ever considering value, build quality, performance.

Link to my purchase (wish it'd been available in red when I bought it):
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CG68TT84/

Now I'm off to ask questions about stones sets, eg:

Diamond, coticule, DMT, Shapton Pro, Strops & emulsions.

If you go through the big thread on these sharpeners I ran into the same problem with the parking hook. I used a bit of wire coat hanger to extend it and it works perfectly. My only other complaint is the clamps on it.

If you go through the entire thing, take it apart, clean it, reassemble it correctly and properly time and space things it is an even better sharpener than out of the box.
