You need to buy the Gold membership separately, then notify Spark to prorate your remaining Basic time to extend the Gold.

No, there is no way to charge the difference.
You just buy the gold membership and then post here in S&S that you'd like the remainder of your basic prorated onto your gold membership. You lose nothing.
