I've been looking around the forum and watching videos on sharpening techniques to try and improve. Murray Carter is just insanely knowledgeable but I'm sharpening Case, Sog, and Mora Knives, not $400 Japanese kitchen cutlery. I was thinking about Arkansas Hard Stones or Japanese Waterstones and trying to freehand more. Below is what I have going now. My setup is very inexpensive and modest, an old crock stick box I've had since I was 14, a Smith's Pocket Sharpener just for doing serrations (I don't like pull-thru sharpeners), a 1 foot piece of cheap leather belt, and a home depot special cheap stone. I'd like to keep things under $100 for a new setup. Any suggestions are welcome. And if you guys have pics of what you use that would be great to see!

I am partial to the GATCO system. It is a rod guided system.

I added the extra fine and ultmate finishing hones to mine along with strops.

Pretty inexpensive for the performance.

Are you looking at natural stones more, or anything? You can find smith and norton sets that have three stones attached to a triangle thing on a base. Smith has it in arkansas ans norton has SiC, AlO or arkansas. You're not gonna break the bank on any of these and they'll cover the majority of what you would want in a sharpening kit. You could also look at DMT. They have a set with 2 double sided 6in stones in a wooden box that will cover everything you need. The last time I saw it, it was $80.

On a personal note, I like using 4in stones. I can bring them where ever with me and play with them when I'm bored. They're also cheaper than the full sized ones so I can try all the different types of stones for less. Right now, I'm playing with an AlO set with course, med, fine and it cost me 30 after shipping.

I am looking at Arkansas stones and I'll actually be traveling to Arkansas in about a month so I may be grabbing some souvenirs! I'm also looking at the DMT D3EFC 3-inch Credit Card Sized- Extra-Fine, Fine and Coarse Diamond pack for carrying out and about. I did have a mostly unused lansky deluxe kit that I just parted with on ebay to save up for something else. I never felt comfortable using that rod kit.

Good luck getting those souvenirs! That'd be awesome. Everyone loves those dmt cards. And they are quite portable. I've seen people buy a cheapo wallet just for them and a piece of leather.
