Upgrading to variable speed KMG - where to buy

Hello all,

I'm looking to upgrade my kmg to 2HP variable speed but am wondering if it would be pretty straight forward to buy the parts elsewhere. I can pick up the mounting bracket from Beaumont, then the motor and controller from electricmotorwholesale.com/ for about 700 shipped. In all I'd be saving about $170 but if I'm going to dedicate a day or two to workarounds I won't bother.

Thanks for reading

When you buy from Beaumont, it's all just parts in a box -
It's not connected and assembled, no advantage over buying it anywhere else.

For $40 I would make that bracket myself too, some steel bar and some holes drilled.

GDok,

I don't know your experience level with this grinder but might I suggest making sure this machine will run belt speeds in the 5,000 plus SFM on the high end. This is the belt speed that favors ceramic belts. I changed both the drive wheels on my KMG's from 4" to 6" giving me 5400 SFM belt speed. I run a 2 and a 3 hp machine, both are pulley driven, I don't know how your VS machine will translate to comparable belt speeds.
Regards, Fred

You can get sheaves from Zoro in almost any size. Tb woods is the brand I think. You can get almost any speed by playing with the pulley ratios. I too have a 6" drive wheel and too am in the neighborhood of 5300 all out with a 1750 3 hp motor.

Read up on sheave ratios. Search on kmg in this forum. I posted very detailed pulley ratios a while back that should make it quite easy for you to figure things out.

Outside of choosing pulley sizes, buy it all elsewhere and put it together. That is what you would be doing anyway if you bought from BMW.

I was a hot rodder in the 60's and drove the big block Chevies, I can't afford the big blocks these days and the KMG with the 6 inch drive wheel somewhat takes there place. A true pleasure to grind with. :) Fred
