I just ordered this Strider PT and ZT 0550 with additional blue/back scale new online. Was very excited to get my expensive package today and this is what I got. I was happy at first but now (about 4 hours later) think I was in denial. 551 knife looks fine, but the scale has an anomoly. Does anyone have a scale with this imperfection, or has anyone seen this in new a PT befofe? Am I being picky? It's my first time having this issue and I'm a new collector. Are these problems common? Thanks.

The ZT 551 scale "bump" in the finger choil is normal. Mine had it too. For the Strider, it would really depend to me. I would call that a blemish. IF you plan on just giving it full use, it is pretty much meaningless. If the piece is for display, or planned resale, I would ask to exchange it for a new one. Hope this helps!

Yeah, that's what the 0551 scale should look like, mine has that same feature.

If you are disappointed send it back. You will be looking at it as a defect forever, possibly.

Just wondering more about the strider. It came in a sealable plastic bag with no box or paperwork. Is this routine? I realize they're a small company, but at least a generic box would have been nice, if not somewhat protective.

I have heard they don't come with boxes, so that sounds normal to me.

You cut with the knife, not the box. ;)

Yes the bag is normal.

Send that dinged up Strider back to the dealer for an exchange if you can, if you're not a heavy user and a "collector" as mentioned. If you are a heavy user it'll have a lot of others to match it soon. :D

Strider's don't come with boxes, and they're billed by Mick himself as user knives and the finish isn't perfect nor do they claim it to be. If it bothers you swap it out. On a side note, if thats black oxide like I think it is then its going to wear nicely with use anyway. Its a Strider, just beat the hell out of it.

Strider makes great knives but they have had some issues with QC in the past. I have a PT with some play in it and it drives me bat shit crazy but I really don't want to send it in. It is standard for them to send it without papers and just in a plastic bag though.

I feel your pain. Sometimes it's worth the wait though? The OP bought through a dealer I assume and probably can pick up the phone and exchange his for another one or store credit if he wants to.

If I was going to keep it as a collection piece - which I wouldn't - that's exactly what I'd do. Call them and send it back or beat the crap out of it. Pretty simple choice yes? ;)

Funny enough, the Chinese fakes of SMFs that I have seen...come with a pretty nice box.

On a side note, products that are intended to be presentation pieces dont generally come in a plastic baggy.

I'd exchange the PT for a new one, just my opinion. I understand Strider isn't balls out about fit and finish but that's a pretty gnarly scratch...it would bug me.

The PT is in the mail on it's trip back to the dealer. Perfect excuse/rationalization to exchange for a large Sebenza.:D What the hell, it's only a few more bucks, lol.

Why is that bump on the ZT considered normal?? It obviously isnt correct. The fact that they all have them makes me wonder why ZT quality control would accept that??? I wouldnt accept that at a $100.00 price point.

I say send it back.

Personally, I plan on using whatever I buy these days. So typically I buy used. If I buy new, I want to put all the scars on it myself.

Earlier comments say that it's normal. I'd have to use it and see if it was a bother and then correct it with a about 10 minutes and some 400 grit sandpaper. It does wonders on little G-10 jobs.

I didn't like my BM 710's thumbstud hugging the frame so tight so I got some 400 grit and layed the G-10 back just a little and it made all the difference in the world. Opens like a dream and you can't even tell it's been sanded there since the G-10 darkens to black as soon as you use it or put a drop of oil on the area and wipe it off. ;)

*Display/collecting, send it back.
*Use, keep 'em. They will look far worse in a jiffy if you actually use them.
