Upsidedown Carry: Is it Practical?

Depends on the sheath. The stock kydex sheath for my Browning knife could barely retain it vertically

I carry a Spyderco temperence and a TOPS Wolf pup both upside down and have had no problems !
If you have a Kydex sheath that seems a little loose heat it up on one point and put a slight dimple in to cause a tight spot !!!

I've carried Glock knives inverted on the issue suspenders, Mark II on the belt, etc.

I think the original problem was quick access in the atmoshere of Vietnam. Not to many places to hang a knife on the old gear, and not too many sheaths could do the job. Duct tape was common, along with a dummy cord, blousing rubber or piece of inner tube to secure the knife.

The Glock never fell out in the field, the Gerber I constantly checked, the folding knives I reverted to I never lost. Fixed blades were too much for duty carry because like most, I didn't need them. The last I tried was a Nimravus, it fit just fine under a mag pocket on the tac vest - handle up, just showing. Still unnecessary.

I think its just a stage we all go through.

One caveat ... I was carrying my Becker CU/7 upside down
on the chest strap of a backpack. I went to get the knife out,
my hand slipped and while the knife was falling out I instinctively
(unfortunately) grabbed it. Luckily only my thumb was cut (since it
was the only one on the sharp side) and a
rather nice cut at that. I won't be carrying it upside down anymore.
But the sheath was probably not made for it.

I lost a perfectly good BM 100 RR last year that was inverted on my PFD while doing a little portage busting, and that sheath had a extra lock on it.
Still my own fault for tying a lanyard on the knife, dang thing must of caught a tree never to be seen again, "maybe". By the time I noticed it was gone I was already 5 miles away  and after the day we had paddling and portaging going back was not a option.
Hopefully a Canadian doesn't grab it before I can get back up that way next summer.;)

msiley...

Yaa that sheath is no where near what you need for inverted carry..

That is outright dangerous,, and what happened to you is exactly what happens..

Hey Helle....

Those thumb locks on those OEM sheaths,, are right next to useless..

I haven't seen one yet that when engaged the knife can't be drawn out...

A false sense of security....

Is there anyone that makes a sheat with a thumblock that works? Would you have to have your knife special made with a notch on it to engage? I read about the nimravus needing to be filed down for the lock to actually engage and don't like the sounds of that one bit.

Supper..

In my opion, those thumb locks wouldn't work, no matter what you do to the knife..
It's a flawed design...

If the sheath is made correctly,, it doesn't need a thumblock...

Yes, I'm trying work out the details on an order I'd like to place. Do most people mail you an internatnl MO?
If so I just need the total cost for the MO.
Can you do a kydex sheath for an Erikssen model 711 like this:
http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html
711.jpg

with grommets (or holes, or slots) along the sides (and maybe bottom/top) to allow for tie down or attachment to a pack strap. Yes this would be for inverted carry.

Please confirm that you already have a mold for an Erikssen 711, because your site lists a Frosts 711, but I think this is an error.

Oh, I guess I'll need a second sheath for it too, for belt carry. All shipped to zip = 99336

I have personally NEVER had any issue with my neck knives being upside down. Also, I have some kydex sheaths, that I have the utmost confidence in, if I opted to hang 'em upside on gear.

If the sheath is made correctly,, it doesn't need a thumblock...

Here's another one I've been thinking about:

can you mold a kydex sheath for, say, a Gerber Multi-Tool that is secure enough to hold it "upside down" and so when you draw it from the sheath it slides the pliers out before fully releasing? I was talking about it with a friend and he said that once used to it, it would save time every time we use them at work (all the time) especially if it could be designed to slide the pliers back in at the same time that you were reinserting it.

Like other posters have mentioned, it depends on the sheath (maker).

I"ve carried inverted by Bradburn, Hayes, Yurco and those knives have been perfect in their sheaths. I currently have two customs I play with inverted, don't use them, but they are rock solid in their sheaths. Most production sheaths I"ve seen, however, left much to be desired of, inverted or not.

Hey Guys....

Supper...

Dave is correct,, all depends on the maker of the sheath...

As for the Gerber multi-tools..

Yes I make an auto deploy holster that opens the tool for you when it is drawn, as well as closes it when it is put back in the holster...

Not a problem...
