After a decade in the trades being the only guy on my crew who didn't buy knives at home depot, it seems like pocket folders and knives in general are making a comeback. Also a whole lot of crazy politics around the world in regards to knives, you'd think we're an endangered species, but maybe that's not really the case...

I go into a lot of machine shops and manufacturers, almost everyone has pocket knives on them now. And the quality seems to be improving. More Kershaws, Spydercos, Benchmades, Cold Steels, etc now where ten years ago there were many more $5 gas station knives.

I would say most folks have no real need of the sorts of higher end knives that many of us own.

That said, there is a world of difference between no-name, big box or gas station knives, and the kind of quality one can get for just a few dollars more.

But, you have to know, know someone who knows, or put the effort into knowing.

And most folks dont' know what they don't know.

(Know what I mean?  )

Agree with what’s been said and also the price of “better” knives keeps going up and up, so that deters most “regular knife” people away from the better brands like Spyderco, BM, ZT etc.

Imo it's just good to see more people using knives as tools and carrying them daily. I did however have a buddy laugh at me when I told him I thought I lost a 150 dollar knife (cheap by most standards) in his house. When I found it he said " oh is that your 150 dollar knife" mockingly, followed by "holy sh this is lighter than my razor." Think I changed his mind that day. :D

Price of better knives going up should mean that they are in demand.

I was walking into the county courthouse last week to drop off some paperwork, went through the metal detector and forgot I had my Combat Troodon on me. The officer just had me put it in the tray. Then politely asked me if he could look at it and open it. He got a big ole grin when the beast glided open then slammed shut. He gave it back to me and said with a frown, I just carry a beat up old smith n Wesson. He then waved me through and let me go about my business in the courthouse with the CT in my pocket.. this is however in tiny town east TX

It’s alot about your attitude and the mood of the LE officer imo…the same thing has happened to me before and even in bigger cities with strict knife laws.

I'm sure the trend is that I'm just becoming more aware of the people around me who are carrying pocket knives. The accessibility of quality knives is better than ever, which is a different trend.

It's also a goal of mine to bring back the normalization of pocket knife carrying.
I was pleased when I was asked at work by my boss to produce a pocket knife to help cut pies.
(the person who brought in pies had forgotten the need for cutting them.)

We live in a throw away society where products are made as cheaply as possible so that you'll be more likely to add it to your Amazon cart then throw it in trash a month later when you're done with it. Companies don't manufacture products with the intent to repair - its cheaper just to send out a replacement under warranty. People keep buying vacuum cleaners, yet vacuum repair shops are a dying business.
But there is a growing segment of our society that is moving away from this trend. They are tired of throwing out and replacing their cheap commodities. They want products that last a generation or more. They want the quality of products that their parents and grandparents had.
This group of people see the value in quality products that are made to last. They purchase better quality appliances, better quality tools, and better quality knives. This isn't the majority of our population, but it is a growing segment.
