Upward trend of knife ownership?

I think a lot of us here are in the buy once cry once category. But it winds up being buy 50, no more crying- just suck it up.
We “accessorize “ now like our women, but with cool shit
I agree although I know I am super cheap. I was upset when the price of my favorite brand of shirt jumped in price from $3.50 to $7. :D With knives I usually am happy with a good quality/ value tool... something the cheapest do not provide.

Price of better knives going up should mean that they are in demand.
Although that’s true, the knife market (or any market, for that matter) is not quite that simple.

Prices are usually the seller’s guess at how much how many buyers will pay at a specific time. Guessing is not a perfect process, and frequently changes on the basis of new information.

Also, the value of money, and the needs and wants of buyers are changing. And the buyers’ knowledge of comparable alternatives, and the market access demographics…

All that said, supply and demand is still a thing, just not the only thing.

Knife content: I’ve tried out a Milwaukee hawkbill, wanted to like it, but couldn’t quite warm up to the button/liner lock combination with no spring. So it was back to slipjoints and fixed blades for me.

My buying decisions influence the knife market in nanoscopic ways…

I don't see any change re the trades in the UK and what people are carrying. Still Stanley type work knives but they work and are cheap and if they get stolen easily replaced, although everyone has one so unlikely.

Perhaps in other settings in the UK things might be different although our restrictive laws and increasing MSM reporting of Knife crime means responsible people would be extremely wary and limited to what they can carry.

And to complete the Rumsfeld quadrangle, we also have “unknown knowns” (things we know but don’t yet grasp the significance of).

I would say most folks have no real need of the sorts of higher end knives that many of us own.

That said, there is a world of difference between no-name, big box or gas station knives, and the kind of quality one can get for just a few dollars more.

But, you have to know, know someone who knows, or put the effort into knowing.

And most folks dont' know what they don't know.

(Know what I mean?  )
He who knows not, and knows not he knows not, is a fool; shun him.
He who knows not, and knows he knows not, is simple; teach him.
He who knows, and knows not he knows, is asleep; awaken him.
He who knows, and knows he knows, is wise; follow him.

I am a Nebraska redneck thats worked in the trades my entire life. We have all always had a knife on us And more often than not a flashlight as well. The guys we meet that don’t have a knife and light are wearing dockers and loafers and are ignored as fools mostly…..

See lots of Bucks and Kershaw but some nicer as well. Of the 3 guys that work for me, 1 carries a 110, one a Hinderer xm-18 and the other a Small Sebenza I gave him for his 10 year on the job gift.

You definitely become more aware of when people around you are carrying knives and what they are carrying, once you go down the rabbit hole. It's like that with watches too, once horology takes a hold of you.

I think recent years of conspicuous consumerism saw a rise in people getting into hobbies more and buying lots of stuff they didn't need. Social media videos promoting both old timey skills (like bushcraft or camping as we once called it) and highlighting the Do It Yourself movement for tool using mammals at least have people buying more tools, even if they will never be used for more than opening the packaging of other tools that will never be used.

This year, global inflation is taking the boots to that trend, when a lot of people are focusing more on essentials (like knives). For some people it will be business as usual and for a lot of others they'll be dialing back their mad spending habits. Others will have to sell their knives to get by. Given how many new knives have been coming out, I hope many of our favourite knife companies manage to ride this out. If things don't turn around soon, we'll see a lot of sales, but also a reduction in knife releases, production numbers, and even lose some knife companies along the way.

Funny you should mention DIY tool using mammals, I really enjoy working with owner-builders, and some have become good friends.

There’s a whole different dynamic there, and they not only get a job done, but the skill-building and “pride of accomplishment/better understanding of how their house works” gains are sometimes priceless as well. I’ve seen cases where a properly tooled up homeowner produced quality results equal or superior to most tradesmen, just because they had the time to work meticulously and the motivation to make it perfect.

Just like knife-nut-itude, it isn’t for everybody, but when it fits it’s a beautiful thing.

With all those work knives still unregulated, are your hospitals reporting an increase in shallow stab wounds? Have your politicians started bemoaning the “Stanley loophole” yet?

Funny you should say that, erm nope!
