Can you survive?

Can you get out?

Are you staying?

I'd like to know.

Very cool!

I will have to do some fancy planning...since the town I live in is a 2 minute hike to the woods.

Thanks guys!

So after re-reading, im still a little confused...no hoarding, but is a bug out bag cool?

So how ''urban'' does this have to be??? Can I not enter because I live in a town of 1,600 people?

Hmmmm. This would have worked better in San Diego

Start with worst case scenario. Go from there.

The point of the exercise is to learn. If you start with bare bones, nothing on hand, and go from there, imagine how well you would do with some gear at your disposal.

Its an exercise of learning.

To be honest I'm a little confused as to where this is going? Do you want to know what we would do? If so my plan is to run to the nearest liquor store and grab all the booze i can carry, when money is worthless whiskey will be the new currency

And you wouldn't win. I'm asking for ya'll to show me, as best you can, with camera and knife in hand, what your options are for exiting or staying in a large city, once all modern amenities have gone. Like, power, water, and security, which, will expire faster than you think.

That's the challenge. Not running to the liquor store. And if you think you'll find anything in any store, look at New Orleans after Katrina.

Without resupply from distributors, almost every store within 50 miles will be empty in no time. Don't believe me? Walmart gets 50+ trucks a day. Most grocery stores, are resupplied each night.

Food for thought.

Since I am in a decent sized city surrounded by nuclear power plants, I think I will go with my bugging the hell out of here scenario...

Could be a long walk over the mountain with kids in tow in worse case. Nice motivation for studying the use of small knives eh?

You were the one that sparked this idea in my head last year, Mist.

When we started talking about urban survival, you opened my eyes to whole world of possibilities I had been overlooking.

Not so much anymore, I started learning, and planning. I'm pretty sure I could go from downtown Knoxville to Juarez and never see a stoplight or pedestrian. HA!!

Throw in that thread you did in the now defunct DPX forum, I started seeing the other side of the coin.

You might win, but I'm hedging odds for the other guys. You know what the hell you're doing, but I know your entry will be an experience and a half, so, you got that going for you. :D

Funny you should ask...I was just down at the Lowest the other day and something kept naggin at me to pick these up.

I've been meaning to come up with this plan anyway so I will work something up here. Roads get all jammed up on normal days around here so you gotta know some back roads if there's any hope of putting some miles between us and NYC. I do think waiting out the initial panic would be wise though for a few days at least.

Yeah, urban and wilderness survival have a lot of similarities...but the differences are reeeeally different. Cool, always glad to hear I inspired something besides a foul mood...I seem to be really good at that one, just ask the mrs. :) Ah hell you know me man, I'm more interested in sharing information than winning prizes, and besides I have a photography addiction. Besides if E doesn't give me a 16 I'm going to kick him in the shin and then buy one while I'm at Blade :) Either way I'll have a 16 or 17...still thinking there...long before the 4th of July :D

This will be an interesting one for me. I've casually thought about this, but never really planned. I'm right in the middle of a mid-sized city (85,000) and half-way between Milwaukee and Chicago.

In just giving more serious thought to my plan to get out of town, I've already punched a lot of holes in the theories that come easily.

I think a cool way to enter this contest would be to practice your "bug out" plans. like just pretend you're at work and you walk outta the building with your edc or whatever, and just start walking or biking or driving and show us the way you would go to get home?

I dunno just brainstorming here. For me at this point since my jeep is busted i'd have to walk or bike home, then get said bike, load it up and ride out of town to my BOL. Hmmm. Always good practice. long ride....

Awareness and preparation is important here.

Do it now, before you need to do it, is my theory. So far its worked wonders in what I thought was a good plan. I live with my back to the mountains. In a big gully, plateau on the west, and high mountains on my right.

Some things to see and remember are subterranean spots. Places out of line of sight, that give clear, flat line of sight, front and back. Those are good ways to travel, either on foot or with bikes.

For those that stay, food's gonna be an issue. And security. Being unseen is much better than being barricaded.

Lots of things to think about.

So just to be clear a good general criteria to go by is to show and illustrate through pictures ways you would try to survive if stuck in your house, ways you would try to get out of your area and where you would go to, and a few skills using just a small BKT that would assist you in each scenario? (Also, extra credit if you can integrate strategies using other people around you or other miscellaneous strategies unique to your situation?)

If done right, is this the kind of entry that might take up 2 posts or would you like us to try to be concise and not babble on and include extraneous pics?

Thanks.

Yup, pretty much.

Take as much as you need, its rare when we get a full run on any contest where folks sign up.

As always, the best job wins. You are impressing Ethan here, not me.

If you do enough work to fill up two posts with pictures, go for it.

As far as commentary, pass along what you learned as best you can.
