Can you give me your opinion on a good Spyderco for urban EDC? Could one of the following be an option? Byrd Cara Cara, Byrd Finch, Byrd Meadowlark, Byrd Raven, Dragonfly.

The good thing about the ones you mentioned are the prices , if you happen to lose it you can replace it easily.
I own a Meadowlark , cant say a single bad thing about it.
Slim profile , not too heavy , razor sharp and easy to keep up , classy looking (not too awful sheeple un-friendly) and wallet friendly.

The Natives are a good choice, as well as the Centofante and Caly Jr. I'd probably look around for a nice FRN Caly Jr...they're quite small, have good ergonomics...

If you've got 115 or so, you might try a Captain. I haven't played with one in real life, but I'm told it's very comparable in size to a Delica. Plus it looks like it's got fantastic ergonomics, G10, finger choil...blade is weird looking but might be useful.

I think it's the G10 cara cara I like most from the Byrd line if you're trying to conserve money. My knife wisdom is to save up and buy what you really want...if you really wanted a mini Persion, hypothetically, the Byrd just isn't going to "cut it." Worth waiting a couple more pay checks for.

People are less likely to pee on themselves at the sight of a normal pocket knife in the country.

Look at a cricket. Its pretty much as unthreatening as you can get but has the blade area of a chainsaw.

I don't buy that. Living in Los Angeles most of my life, I've never had anyone pee themselves when they see my knife. The most I've ever gotten was a surprized reaction that I had a knife at all, since it seems most folks don't give much thought to the idea of carrying a knife. The key seems to be that the knife be used in a more the appropriate time and place, rather than using the "approriate" knife.

Further, all those knives suggested don't seem to be any more or less appropriate for edc regardless of where they are used. My guess is if you want the least intimidating looking knife, you'd go for something small and brightly colored or "elegant" looking.

Take a look at the "Stretch" model. It is unassuming, thin, carries well, easy to operate, and provides a blade big enough to do most any normal edc task.

The Salt 1 with yellow handle. Great urban knife IMO. Plain edge, all the better.

Try living near DC, Chicago or NYC. A buddy nearly lost his job for opening a coffee package with the keychain multitool he carries. He was putting it away when the woman saw the coffee package was cut and told HR he had a knife without actually seeing it. He should have just said it was scissors.

I'd say that the Cara Cara, while being a pretty cool knife, wouldn't be a great choice for city carry - it's fairly big, IMO. I'd go with a smaller blade. I carry a Meadowlark myself in the city, and it does the job. Maybe look at the Spyderco Delica, Spyderco Dragonfly, or Byrd Crow or a SAK. Just suggestions.

For an "urban EDC" I recommend the Spyderco Military.

Yes, I'm serious.
It will cut about anything you need to cut (string, plastic, boxes, papers, etc.), but it can also be used for self-defense.

Good luck,
Allen.

i have a byrd crow, so i can give you some feedback on it. i think the blade is a good size for what you're looking for, an urban EDC. mine needed to be resharpened when i got it from the factory. clip is stiffer than i'd like. lock seems ok. i can get a very sharp edge on the blade, seems to sharpen pretty easily. i dont carry the knife all that much, because i just like my other knives more. however, that's not completely fair because they all cost at least twice as much as the byrd

Yeah, I grabbed a Crow awhile back and was mostly impressed. Online it looks really flimsy, but I was surprised at how stout it felt in my hand. I guess the scales look like FRN in the photos and are aluminum in real life was the primary difference. The ergonomics were quite good also. The F&F was not super impressive, but, hey, it's a 20 dollar knife. The only thing I was dissapointed in was the liner lock. It locked up fine and reliably, no concerns there, but if I did a simple thumb flick about one in four times it stuck. It wasn't impossible to get out by any means, it just took quite a bit more effort than your hand expects from the other 30 times you had opened it.

But again, for 20 dollars, man, it's a pretty neat knife. Wish it were made in America though.

The Military is a gorgeous and super ergonomic knife, but dang, that thing is so long. I can't even imagine what your boss might do if he heard you were carrying a "military." I respect AllenC, but I would not carry the Military here in FW, and wouldn't dream of it in DC. My humble opinion.

The Yojimbo you might be able to pass off as a humble box cutter though, and its got a 3 inch S30V blade, great ergonomics (and well designed for SD, in my opinion) etc etc etc. It's about as long as the Military though handle wise, but again, I think you might be able to get away with higher ups eyeing it as its so box cutterish.

I'll go outside of the parameters, if you'll forgive me, and recommend a minigrip too. I think it's probably the best low end EDC out there.

Fallkniven U2 folder would seem to fit the bill well. Its not a one hand knife, but you don't get much more sheeple friendly, and its edge is hardened to 64 HRC, so it should stay sharp pretty much forever if you are just opening envelopes and such.

yes, i have the u2 too. the blade is amazing, isn't it? it gets a lot more carry than the byrd crow, in my pocket anyway. it also costs more (price = $50), as you said isn't a single hand opener, and certainly not a spyderco :D . but a great knife to carry when out with the gf's parents or any other sheeple you'd rather not risk freaking out (or for when you just want a freaking badass little blade in your pocket).

Get a DELICA. I got stopped by the cops and searched and they gave me back my knife and the rest of my stuff when they were done so i know its legal :D

Its a great handy and sharp EDC and its well worth the price.

There are lots of Spydies that will work as an urban EDC.
If you want something slim, go for one of the Centofante knives, I've got a Centofante III and it's an awesome city knife.

The Native is a great, compact, knife. I like the Native III (the one made in Japan) because of its very comfortable handles, but you can get one of the US made Natives (which some people prefer) for a great price.

The Endura and Delica are better than ever with their new features.

If you want to spend a bit more, the Paramilitary is an excellent EDC folder.

I'll throw in a vote for the Centofante 3 as well. It is a very underrated knife. It has a VERY thin blade (5/64 I think) and slices like you wouldn't believe.

before that I carried a Native. I'll probably mix it up till I can figure out which one I like better. Despite their similar profiles they're different knives. Both are good, though.
