Urban Grudge Size Comparison

I should also point out, I was concerned the thickness might be an issue, but as I pointed out above, the weight is not bad. And the feel and balance in the hand is very good.

With the swedge and the blade grind tapered towards the tip, it may nice be a sliver thin slicer, but it is fine by me.

I measure the thickness of the blade:

At ricasso: 0.244"
Where the swedge starts in front of the ricasso: 0.208"
Approx. middle of blade: 0.200"
1" from tip: 0.15"

Thick enough to provide toughness and thin enough for most cutting tasks/chores.

Thanks for doing that Pic DWRW and to Jazub for replying to my query .... now I am even more regretful at missing it .... but maybe the exchange might offer an oppertunity.

I liked your impressions of the knife DWRW ... the style of your posts reminds me of KnifeGuy on the SY Forum .... are you the same "David" ?

Anyway ... regardless ... if you try the knife at batoning smaller sticks .... which you are limited to by the blade length ... so long as your baton is'nt too thin you will find no problem with the swedge .... even when sharpened. I sharpen or create a number of swedges on my smaller knives to use with fire steels or for a secondary robust edge for reaming using the point so I twist in the direction of the swedge .... rather than torque and roll the finer edge I want for skinning near the tip ... and all of my knives never have a problem batonning .... even the larger models like the FSH Variant with a serrated swedge are fine.

If the baton gets a few dinks in it .... no problem .... I can always burn it and find another.

Just a thought from my own use and many thanks for yours. If you are KG from the SYKCO forum ... I am Steelfan on there and we go "way back" .... I still love the curved finger choil you did on your S5LE if it's you and must do the same on mine at some time ...:cool:

I am that guy, but Doug not David.

I knew you were Steelfan. ;) yes, we go way back.

My S5 was not an LE, but rather a CG I made satin prior to finding out the LE would be INFI. :o ... Impatience got me. :( .... then I missed on the LE due to tight finances. I should NOT have purchased this UG. But, I couldn't resist. Now I need to go sell more stuff to help cover it. :(

If you need help with your choil, I would be happy to help. Just send me a PM and we can work it out. But, I have seen some of your mods. The choil is an easy mod. You would pay more in shipping overseas than it is worth considering.

I just use a drum sanding head on my drill press and do it freehand.

Sorry Doug , on the SYKCO forum I always say "KG" so I was guessing at "David" ...

Yes I have a drum sander ready to go for the modification and will do it at some point...
I can get by with the flat choil tho' so I have'nt pushed to do it ... I also keep thinking about sanding off the spine ramp on my DFLE and doing the same mod to it's choil ... it is only "time" and being able to use it fine as is which holds me back ... but "one day" I will get these done.

I need to strip a BWM CG and convex it first .... following HD's fine example ... I also fancy rounding the choil as per a Nuclear version rather than have flat edges ....

I am a bit like you in that the only issue I have with all of this is the "time" aspect ... but it does give you a "bonding" with the knife ...

I am pleased you went for an UG if you missed the LE and SE versions on the S5 .... plus it is'nt coated and does'nt need any work ... and it has the "gimping" to use with a fire steel if you want to leave the swedge flat for "thumb" comfort ... it really looks a cracking knife and the price was good too ... the secondary market mark up will be a bit more ... $310 with PP if others follow the first to go on ....

A kind HOG has offered me a Basic 5 which I have jumped at ... so maybe the UG can wait a while ... I am in no hurry and they may come up at Knob Creek ?? I might contact Jim for a proxy ... we will see ...

Just wanted to say that your insight to knives on the SYKCO Forum was a welcome source of knowledge for me .... all the best .... Pete.

You could call it that. I do appreciate the ones I have "Fixed". But, I don't enjoy thinking about the work prior to getting started and having spent "good" money on a knife only to have to do so much to fix it.

I like SATIN to be more reasonably priced. This UG wasn't too bad. The S5LE was quite a deal. But, I had just finished satin finishing my SR-101 version and I like SR-101 just fine. Plus, timing was bad for me with finances when the LE was released.

+1 to all that! Although, I think for my uses a bit of edge profiling a some improved sharpness is in order prior to being a good user. Otherwise, I am very pleased.

Thanks. Likewise though. You obviously have a broad knowledge of knives and your opinions seem to often fall inline with my views. Further, you have shared some great reviews and feedback on knives as well.

Just humped down (literally ) to the PO.

Got my UG .

Real purposeful blade  saber or reverse grip edge out. I like the heavy pommel, you could really clock something with it.

I think I have my new under the vest

cool
