So I'm a denizen of a rural/country environment, but often wind up in cities because of work.

When walking nervously around in the urban wilderness, the heft of a sturdy cane is oddly comforting.

So I've started making a new one:

Got some Black Walnut and Elm for contrasting colors.
Here four hunks of wood are dimensioned; two at 1/2", two at 3/8"...

Time to get to gluing; ten chunks of wood, so which part goes where...?

Alrighty - Glued and screwed to the workbench instead of using clamps.
Once the glue has cured, the screws/washers will be be removed, and the holes drilled larger for dowels...

Drilled and doweled...

Now for basic, rough shaping...

More rough shaping...

Mostly shaped to its final form, it went for a bit of a walk in the woods to start fine-tuning the fit; so far so good...!

Now for lots and lots of sanding (and sanding, and sanding) :o !!

Very Nice ! I've been thinking about trying one using that method. Keep the pics coming.

Hey, that's coming out really nice, very cool project. That should provide some comfort in the "urban wilderness".

Nice!! I love the way you did that. I might have to cobble something like that together myself...maybe add some weight inside in strategic places :)

A stick is an oddly comforting thing isn't it?
I went for a midnight stroll a while ago...got momentary heebejeebies, so i picked up a stick and felt much happier.

lol i realized even at the time...the knife i had was probably a far better anti-boogieman weapon than the bit of dead maple I scavenged...But still having a walking stick was very comforting for some reason.

Excellent job River-8!

Actually, the stick, depending on size, weight, etc. would be the better weapon at least IMHO.

Lol lets not start that debate!

Well yes, I'm inclined to agree with you in general, but you didn't see the flimsy stick I found that night. :D

Ok so sanded down (up ) from 60, 100, 150 and 220 grit for a fairly smooth finish; the grain details are amazing  !!

Steel wool (00 & 0000) next, then the finish...
Based on advice I'm leaning toward Danish Oil, but am open to suggestions.
Tried Tongue Oil before, but found it got a bit too shiny for me, almost like a shellac(?) coating built up.
Looking for something that leaves the wood feeling more natural, uncoated - if that makes any sense :o ...

Lol lets not start that debate!

Right; Tastes Great! vs Less Filling!

Why not bring both?!! (Just sayin' (Oh never mind :p))

Thanks for the comments!

Thanks for posting this! Excellent work and I'm sure it took lots of time. I have some mahogany laying around and have been wondering what to do with it.:D
