Urban Hiking Stick...?

I like Danish oil - it's tung oil mixed with some thinners so it soaks in better IIRC.
gives a nice satin finish.
Another wiping finish that I've found is called "good stuff" - it's for butcher block counter-tops. nice durable finish, not too slick but good water resistance. After 2 years I can finally see some spots on the most used counter in the kitchen that need a bit of sanding and a second coat.

That's awesome!

My "urban hiking stick" looks like this:

Fascinating. How did you do the initial rough shaping?

A friend of mine has an amazingly well equipped wood shop, so used a hand-held disc grinder to take the edges off. Then a belt/disc grinder for shaping. For the inside radius of the handle I have cylinder-sanders that go in my drill press.
A hand wood rasp works for final shaping, then comes the endless sanding...

Several hours of sanding at the picnic table in our back yard...
This was taken early in the process; by time I'd finished the table was completely obscured by enormous piles of sanded sawdust  !

Thanks; that's exactly the sort of info I need!!

Next is a lanyard...

:D

What is the tip at the botom? Replaceable?

Just common copper plumbing supplies; 1" to 1/2" reducer, a short length of 1/2" pipe with a cap on the end. Punch a hole in the cap and hold the whole business together with a 3" SS screw. Then a standard cane tip.

Here's the lanyard, which wraped around holds the cane comfortably in the hand:

Or clipped to my shoulder bag leave it hands-free:

Very nice work. I was wondering what's with the leather gloves? I notice that Myke in Man Woman Survial wore gloves when they were tramping around. I think it is a very good idea actually, but I never thought about doing it except when it's colder.

Must be almost finished - Used some Danish Oil to, well; finish it:

That's beautiful!

I trained at a filipino martial arts academy for a number of years and we always wanted to carry a set of escrima sticks in the city but walking around with two batons would not generally go over well. We got a black PVC joint and connected the two fighting sticks to make a less-threatening-looking walking stick. Put a rubber tip on one end. The sticks popped apart very quickly if you needed to use them.

That was our Filipino urban hiking stick.

Lol lets not start that debate!

Well yes, I'm inclined to agree with you in general, but you didn't see the flimsy stick I found that night. :D

I would have thought that a stick, staff, or club would be a great self-defense weapon, but my experience carrying and using a baton, not as effective as I would have hoped. I trained with a baton for several years before I was actually in a situation where I needed to use it. I always thought how much it would suck to get hit with a baton, but discovered that hitting an amped up (andrenaline not drugs) criminal with one had a less of an effect than I thought it would. I'm sure it would be more effective if you hit him in the head, but I can only do that in a lethal force situation, and I would have to believe if the criminal is aggressively trying to assault you it would be hard to hit him square in the head. It's amazing how much blunt force pain a person can withstand in a situation where they are amped up.

I stopped carrying a baton and rely on my, hands, OC, and taser now. Clubs, sticks, etc do work great for fending off dogs.
