In light of some recent urban survival threads, I thought I'd recommend The Mole People by Jennifer Toth. Toth is some sort of sociologist who spent a great deal of time studying and interviewing the homeless people of Manhattan who choose to live underground in abandoned subway tunnels and such. It was both a fascinating and horrifying read, but very, very interesting.

Most people don't now it, but every major city has a labyrinth of tunnels under it. Some are for transport systems, some are for infrastructure maintanence and repair, some are cable and communications tunnels. Some are from out of date systems that are not used anymore, and nobody from any authority ever goes in there anymore.

Once down underground, the temprature gets very stable.
