I am just puting this out here for the sake of seeing what people think about this topic.

Urban survival

what should be taken into account regarding food, water, shelter etc.
especialy in Canada.

thanks for your ideas
kind regards Sammtv.

The basics as you said, food, water, shelter + emergency first aid, sanitation, Etc.

Beyond that is a matter of "how much" and that will be determined by what time period you think you may need to survive to get through various crisis'.

Start by building a 24 hours kit for your family
Then expand it to 72 hours
And then build on that for longer times.

I'm not totally done reading it, but I would recommend "When All Hells Breaks Loose" by Cody Lundin, based on what I have read (about 60%) of the book.

Good starting point for reading.

One of the most important things you have to decide is whether you are going to stay put or go somewhere else for that time period. This won't change a lot of what you might need for a given period but it will probably make a difference how you store and package it.

If TSHTF in Canada in winter your order of priorities is: heat & shelter, water, food. And in fact, water takes care of itself once you have heat, if you see what I mean.

It depends on what calamity you envision. Worst case scenarios there is only one way to address the problem: GET OUT.

If it comes down to some sort of disaster where people are actively killing for food or other supplies, it's quite likely that you won't be able to defend yourself with whatever firearms, ammunition and skills you have because the people, if desperate enough, will simply burn you out. Historically effective, even works for the government when they want to prove a point as well. :D

I would sit it out in my home and use up my stored resources. You can always find water and make due with a makeshift sewage system and barter for food and medicine. My biggest fear would be the authorities moving everyone out to camps where we would be at the mercy of the system. If I bugged out I would have a detailed city map and a detailed area map that shows all the back roads. A good AM radio for emergency broadcasts and the possibility of a police scanner to keep ahead of the authorities or trouble spots. There will be looting in the big cities and the authorities will be too busy to answer individual calls. It will be up to the individual to protect himself and his family against the looters and thug gangs that will be roaming around. Be armed and be inconsicuous and hope the thugs will bypass you. I see neighborhoods and subdivisions banding together for protection. That does not mean you turn needy people away, but your family and group will have to decide how to divide up their resources for the long run. This topic has been brought up before in this forum and had alot of interesting posts.

wow thanks for the responses, I was talking to a co-worker last night about the 2003 power outage, and we got talking about the ice storms that have hit Montreal and quebec areas in the past and that got me wondering what if ??? been my experiance that what if ??? becomes what do we do know?
love your site Don keep up the good work.

I agree 100%. If they want it and you have it, they'll get it.

You can give it to them, one round at a time.;)

Ironically, I received 'When All Hell Breaks Loose' today, from Amazon. I think urban survival is an important issue. Also, there may be some urban survival techniques that can be applied to the wilderness.

Yup, I agree. The main concern ref. "urban survival" in a disaster-type situation is "other people". A good assault rifle w/plenty of ammo is a must!

I had a brain wave once while parked in peak hour traffic on the freeway

and got the hell out of town

I figure the getting is a bit easier and less rushed while there is no emergency happening than it is if there is mass panic

preparing starts now , and to me , its at times more than gadgets and kits

Its more comfy for me to sit out a small problem , or easier to clear out for a big one from where I am now than it ever would be in the city where I was

just my $0.02

And vice versa.

It all depends on the exact nature of the emergency/disaster but in general you will probably be able to scavenge some useful items. . . A can to boil water in, discarded plastic bottles to store/carry water. Shards of broken glass can be used to cut things if you don't have a knife. . . If you have some skill with flint knapping you may be able to make some very useful blades and arrow heads if the situation calls for it. Power cords can be used in place of rope or paracord. If you can't take shelter in a building for some reason, there will probably be plenty of material around that you can use to make a shelter.

Don't count on any of this stuff though. You should still carry a basic kit that will cover your basic needs. Then you can scavenge to supplement your kit.

Other people may be a great help, a great burden or a great danger depending on the situation.

Those are the thoughts that come to me right off the top of my head. Good topic.
