Urbancraft Part I - Recon

So Mistwalker,

What's on the agenda for Urbancraft Part II?

Got several ideas...still thinking it through though. It'll be a couple of weeks before I can get to typing it up, editing and uploading the pics and stuff but I'll be working on taking the pics between now and then so I think I'll have it worked out by the time I have the time to do anything with it :)

I could totally see this turning into a top notch book. This kind of thing is incredibly interesting to me. When I've been walking around in downtown areas of some large cities (Phoenix/LA/Houston), I've often had thoughts about this very thing. LIke what I could do in the event of a real diasaster/flood, fire, meteor strike, zombie attack. Glad I am not the only one. Keep up the fine work!

Thanks, I'm glad you find it interesting. The more I study the situation here the more glad I become that I no longer live in a larger city....but the more I think about it, the more I see differently my memories of those places.

When the sewage lines backup, and the power grid goes down, cities will become a festering cesspool.

Those without will attempt to take what they want from those who have it, and the sheer number of people will make safe movement and travel hard to come by.

You have to remember that gangs and thugs have ruled the night for years. Average joe may think it safer to move at night under the cover of darkness, but in many cases that will not be true.

If when SHTF the roads become entangled with abandoned vehicles and motor accidents, many roads will be impassable by normal vehicles.

Motorcycles will be an essential form of transportation. Being able to move quickly and navigate clogged motorways will be paramount.

Bugging In as so many plan including myself cannot be a prolonged plan of survival, looting and firebombing will take place in an extended service outtage. There will be no fire department, police, or ambulance there to rescue you.

Disease will rise, and when people begin to die as a result of weather, disease, murder or accidents, rotting corpses will not be buried in many cases. Rather they will be left unattended and once the mortality rate hits a certain percentage, disease will grow quickly.

Those who are smart enough to do so will head for the hills and small communities of america. Even though they may still have no working sewer or water, these communities are closer knit groups and will work hard to help each other in the beginning.

They will also fight hard to keep what is theirs to themselves. Road blocks and armed militias will spring up in these areas, and outsiders who only bring mouths and nothing to offer will be quickly turned away in many cases.

Owning property in one of these areas should be a key survival plan. 1 acre or even a half of an acre with a small cabin or home with preps and the ability to sustain ones family for 6 months would be a good use of funds.

Great article looking forward to part 2

Well...how bad things get will depend on what happens, and how isolated it is...or isn't. For it to reach that point it would have to be a nationwide incident. Even if local and state authorities loose control Washington will not give up control of any city in this country very easily. So far I think what happened after Katrina was about as bad as we've seen in this country but it could have played out very differently if New Orleans had been but one of many major cities devastated by something. Of course reactions like those require logistics and financial backing....and historically countries seem to have a habit of breaking themselves in Afghanistan and the middle east so....who knows

I think the only thing we can expect from our government is to be taxed effectively. They excel at that endeavor.

Don,
I have to take exception to your use of the word "effectively".
there is a LOT of waste in the collection of our taxes.
I recall reading a long time back that 70% or more of the income taxes collected were spent staffing and running the IRS, printing out forms, etc...
I feel you would have been more correct had you used the word "thoroughly", or even stopped at the word "Taxed".

mistwalker, those pics look like Galviston. For you, I think Step 1 for urban survival is GTFO of there.... Houston sucks!

I am hoping that will be step one....but considering where I work, where my wife goes to school, and where my daughter goes to school...Step-1 may very well be to GTFI unfortunately...and then Step-2 through whatever being working on GTFO. Because of this I'd like to know all my options ahead of time....or as many as I can notate anyway.

:thumbup:It's so much easier to plan for just you, but yeah you gotta plan for if you are all separated and getting to them on foot.

Same here, I would have to get into the heart of LA, home of the riots (just to reference what the locals are capable of), and then get out to a more rational area of los angeles county where i live.

There is more than a fifty-fifty chance we will be in separate places...

Definitely sounds like a daunting task...some planning would be in order for that one to be sure.

Good Thread

Thanks, I've enjoyed the discussion.

Bumping this up. Been doing some recon of my own and jotting ideas. Would like to share ideas, info, agendas. Have you done anything lately? I've been viewing my habits, travel paths, and surrounding areas in a different light.

yup-same here. been waiting for mistwalker to follow up. but ya know how life happens:).....saw someone from somewhere else on the forum i think, mention the zoo being a place to find meat! hadnt even thought of that.

Sorry guys, I've been working on Part II - Hunting and Gathering (not so much about food), but it's slow go at the moment. I have been out taking photos and gathering materials and "supplies", and setting up an urban survival camp. I have what photos I've taken uploaded and it is partially written now... but work, other projects, and my wife's severe sinus infection which has led to an infection in the root canal of an upper incisor...creating a need for a "root canal" (lots of pain)...has me with my hands full, hell my four-year-old alone is more than a handful :D . I should be ready to post it up next week, maybe even this weekend but I'm not sure yet. It is coming I promise :)

Urban survival camp? That sounds interesting:thumbup:

I hope the whole infection/root canal situation works out well.

Yeah...I try not to make things interesting :)

Thanks man, she's feeling some better but still swelled and in pain and not so good at dealing with an over energetic 4 yr old :)
