One of the inviolate tenets of knife shows is buy, sell, trade.....no brown bagging, but deals between tableholders and attendees is legit.....

Read this from the Knife Expo website.....

NO CARTS OR BACKPACKS ALLOWED IN THE HALL.

ONLY REGISTERED AND APPROVED EXHIBITORS MAY SELL AT THIS SHOW.

If you bring a bag, shopping bag, backpack, rolling suitcase, you will be denied admission until you dump it, either in your car or a friends car.....it cannot go into the show.

Either don't go to the show or don't bring a bag......the show sucked....worst show in my 25 years, sorry for the delay, hope this saves someone the effort.

Best Regards,

I'm curious as to why backpacks or any other type of bags are not allowed into the show. It seems like most guys i know carry their knives and such to shows in them. Also is this going to be the future of all shows eventually?

Steven is right, the show sucked big time. The no bag rule is absurd, I was allowed in with a small bag that was searched but some people with the same size bags were not allowed to bring them in. Totally arbitrary.

So let's see. I fly out the night before for a show. Check out of my hotel in the AM and head over to the show with my travel bag . . . and am denied admission. If I don't have a rental car - like I didn't have last month in Little Rock or earlier this month at the ECCKS - where I can stash my bag, then I am SOL.

Do these clowns even think before they come up with policies like this?

You would be SOL, indeed.

One of the very reasons that knife shows are even worth going to is the opportunity to sell or trade a knife with dealers, or even a knife maker. Many of the knifemakers that I saw at the show yesterday still collect knives from other makers or trade for them. Take that opportunity option out of a show, and there is a big reason not to go again. I know that I will not attend this show in the future.

I was given a number of reasons why this policy is in place, and every one of them is a BS excuse.

What were the reasons given, STeven? I'm curious to hear.

Roger

The three I heard were:

1. "We only want dealers selling knives in the showroom"

2. "The insurance agent insisted on no knives coming into the room from anyone but authorized vendors"

3. "Someone had some knives stolen off his table, and we want to prevent that"

I'll let you all discuss those reasons, my feelings on the issue are already apparent.

STeven-

Thanks for the info. Now I don't feel as bad as I might have. I had seriously been considering driving down, even with my least favorite knifemaker of all time in attendance. There was a time I never missed Pasadena, but didn't go last year.

Oh, good review of what must be one dog of a show now.

Best,

Bob

Well shoot. I was going to take a few to see if I can find/have someone make me sheaths for them, but I guess that's not going to happen. Thanks for posting this. I think I'll stay home and watch basketball.

Thanks STeven. I'm well familiar with the issue as it has cropped up a number of times (along with the makers pre-selling knives issue and makers leaving early on Sunday issue). My feelings on it are close to your own. I was just curious to know what the stated reasons were behind the policy in this instance.

As for #2, then that means they would need to check my pockets, too. And make sure i have no belt clip. Of course I'm sure they didn't do that. So that "reason" is pure BS.

As for #3, to prevent theft they need to check what you have when you LEAVE, not when you enter. Very easy to stuff a small plastic bag in your pants pocket and use that to carry your stolen knife out. So again, this is pure BS.

I tend to think that the only real reason was #1.

Well I guess the Pasadena Knife Expo is out. I had been wanting to find another WC show to attend too. This stops a lot of business and conversation to say the least. Nope not going now and not getting a table.

Was there something wrong with the show other than the no-bag policy?

I was there for a few hours today and enjoyed it. Is it me or did the prices seem lower this year? Tyre had some nice fighters and Anza knives had some designs I'd never seen before.

There did seem to be fewer makers than I remember, and somehow less excitement in the room. Attendance seemed to be down as well, though many of the makers I talked to said they had done well already.

I REALLY wanted one of those Tyres, but couldn't quite pull the trigger- it was so outside what I was looking to add -but so tempting nonetheless.
