URGENT-Pasadena Knife Expo....

These two posts do not jibe to my small brain.

Last year you couldn't bring in ANY bags, this year you can bring in a small backpack, which may be searched. Not sure about bag storage.

Exactly. I've always been impressed with the quality of the knives I've seen at the Pasadena Knife Expo. And come on, guys. What else have we got in Southern California? If knifemakers like Ray and D'Holder are going to exhibit there, I'm damn well going to be there.

And the show doesn't even make an exhibitor's list available, at least, none that I've ever been able to find.

As for other shows on SoCal, there's Solvang and the AKI, both of which do well and provide wonderful information to the public, unlike the Knife Expo.

I look forward to seeing everybody there!! "

guys, the man is asking for help, rather than beat on him why not meet with him and get involved to improve the show?
Pasadena is a great town, the venue is nice and So CA has enough cu$tomers to make a show a $uccess.

I explained to the lady inspecting bags that I wanted the ability to trade with DEALERS WHO HAD TABLES and she still wouldn't let me bring my bag in. What have you done to address that issue, Matt?

We had enough of a problem in the past with brown bagging that our tableholders were complaining vociferously (as in "why should I pay for a table when that guy is selling his knives without paying for a table?") that we came down on the side of prohibiting bags at all, a position that we have since modified, in part because our purveyors needed to be able to buy knives from attendees who brought them in packs.

I think the issue about bags was addressed in my post. For clarification, you can bring a day-pack sized bag, and you can transact business with tableholders. That is, if you are bringing knives to sell to a purveyor or dealer who has a table, that's fine. If you want to trade with a tableholder, that's fine. If you want to buy from a tableholder and need a bag to put your purchased in, that's fine.

But if you are going to be selling so many knives that they won't fit into a regular-sized pack, buy a table. If you are bringing knives or other stuff to sell or deliver to the friends you meet at the show, buy a table (or do your business outside the show).

And as I said elsewhere, I will try to get a list of exhibitors. The club's previous webmaster quit a while back and it is hard to get another member to do the work, so our website does not always get updated. Remember, this is a not-for-profit club of collectors, not a business. There are maybe a half-dozen members who do 95% of the work of the club.

With the advent of the internet and knife forums like this, fewer people see the need to belong to or be active in knife clubs like So Cal Blades. The problem with that is that clubs like ours put on knife shows, and it is becoming harder and harder to continue producing the show. If knife people don't support clubs, there will be fewer shows. The BACKA club no longer puts on a show. As far as I know, Knife Expo is the only knife show in Los Angeles County. If you care about having a show in Los Angeles County to go to, and if you think you have ideas that would make the show better, I invite you to join the club and put your hand in.

The Solvang (aka Nordic Knives) show is technically in Central California, occurs every two years (not including this year) and costs $125.00 to get into. AKI is held in San Diego, is limited to 175 buyers, and takes place every two years (including this year). I'm not sure how much AKI costs to get into, but I suspect it's pricey assuming you can get in at all without an invitation. Both shows focus on high-end customs. The Pasadena show has some high-end customs but also some production knives. I go to see both. One show you forgot to mention was the Plaza Cutlery show in Irvine. I plan to attend that one as well. But none of those shows are as near to me as Pasadena. And as Matt correctly noted, Knife Expo is the only knife show in Los Angeles County. So I, for one, am willing to put up with the perceived slings and arrows of outrageous fortune on the part of show management to be there. Others may do as they please.

If you care about having a show in Los Angeles County to go to, and if you think you have ideas that would make the show better, I invite you to join the club and put your hand in.

Roger that. My application and check will be in tomorrow's mail. See you at the show. :)

Ah yes, I forgot to mention the Plaza show. Dan Delavan does a fine job insuring the public has good information on the show INCLUDING providing an exhibitors' list.

Dan Favano, have you ever helped to put a show on? I have, and unless you are self-employed(I was), it's a time consumer of epic proportion.

The venue is adequate, the people putting on the show are sincere and good people, so if you have the inclination, definitely go to the show.

Yes, I agree that the show should include an exhibitors list. But given how few and far between knife shows are in my neck of the woods, I'd attend without it.

If I still lived in Los Angeles, as I once did, I would probably go, too - but would still "whine" about the problems we've discussed above.

Unless I miss my guess, if you had to move back to Los Angeles from where you live right now, you'd have a lot more to whine about than that. ;) :D

I think I will be walking through on Sunday but until some significant issues are fixed I won't hold a table again.

MVF: I like your avatar... I drive a blue one.

As to the show, I LIVE in Pasadena and don't go to the show! I could walk there from my house, but I stay home... kind of says a lot. :(

That would be a great place to live, John....it's a beautiful downtown, and those in power obviously did a superb job making it a place that someone would want to visit. Not to encourage rampant thread drift, but what is it like at night?

It's one of the reasons I don't go tot the show! Pasadena is just too damn nice to want to spend indoors in a basement ballroom with bad light! I've been to the show I think 3 times in the last 12 years... i just find this particular show kind of depressing, so i run through real quick, maybe I buy some materials and then head out to the fresh air and sunshine ASAP. Pasadena is great. You can walk most places, in fact my wife and I share one car and a 2 seater at that... which in L.A. is unheard of, hell my neighbor has like 5 cars! The only thing missing is some live music places.
