ive read in other posts how a lot of flatground and other suppliers are using foreign and sometimes Chinese manufactured tool steel.

I don’t want this to turn into a debate on the merits or what not if foreign made products just hoping to track down us made tool steel that is preferably precision ground. I remember Nathan the machinist talking about this as well as latrobe producing some US a2

Appreciate the help!

i buy from Starrett, as far as I know it is US steel. they carry A2, A6, O1, and D2 in precision ground flat stock, been using it for years. they also carry O1, A2, and W1 drill rod. flatground is the online sales side of Bucorp from Europe.

Someone mentioned Starett is no longer using us sourced steel. I’ve called and they give me he run around saying hey use multiple mills to provide the steel but won’t give me material certs. That’s who I used to use as well.

He's essentially a service center and not a mill, right? I'd be curious to know where his steel is milled.

There are no us produced o1,a2,d2 toolsteels presently, everything come imported

I'm pretty sure you're mistaken about that. I buy quite a bit of US produced tools steels, mostly Crucible though NSM. These materials come with certs.

I don't know but I'm pretty sure the ESR A2 in America is domestically produced.

Last I checked, Latrobe and Carpenter still make tool steels here in the states.

Starrett doesn't make steel (or much of anything anymore) and I expect their steel is import. Their tools have gotten pretty crappy. Precision Marshall is import.

Arcelor Mittal produces tool steel, and has US production, but I'm unsure if any tool steel is produced in their US locations.

Is Latrobe still actually around? I was under the impression they had somehow became part of Carpenter. I could be mistaken though.

It's my understanding that Carpenter does some of the compaction for Crucible too

Carpenter bought Latrobe.
More than a year ago I spoke with people from Carpenter who told me they (Carpenter) had purchased Latrobe.

A few months ago I was speaking with another steel company. They said Latrobe was purchased by Carpenter, but Latrobe was still operating like they had before the buy out.

Where does your steel come from? I would guess the CPM is from Crucible, CTS from Carpenter. unfortunately as a consumer I can't pick and choose where the steel comes from, although I guess most of the new old stock O1 I have found from companies like Jessop and Simonds was probably made in US.

We've bought steel from United States, Japan and several countries in Europe. Currently we don't have steel from Japan.

I assumed that to be the case, and why they kept the brand name, but nice to have confirmation.

Checked today, there is no tool steel,o-1,a-2,d-2 ect.under 3/8 inch thickness rolled in USA,NuCor will roll a billet if you supply, but it's pricy.
