I am not a Spyderco expert as I only have one Spyderco knife ( tomorrow I get knife #2 when I pick up the Para D2 ). I wish Spyderco would make it easier to ID their USA made knives. We all know the Byrds are Chinese but some of the Spydercos have to really be investigated to find out. Just some food for thought.

Understood but when you are looking in their catalog or shopping online it is not always that easy.

And on Spyderco's website you can search by origin of manufacture as well.

There's a little round icon that represents the flag of the country of manufacture. It's subtle but it's in the catalog PDF. As 5.56 said above you can search via country of origin when looking through the online catalog Download the catalog PDF and you should see it. You can probably tell by price too! :D

I have looked at both and some do and some don't. Example- p16 C07/C07G Police model there is no mention of country of origin. as is most of their knife listings. Sure some list Golden Co such as the Para and Millie. All I am saying is you shouldn't have to work so hard to find out. Some people like me don't buy chinese and want to know USA made upfront.

the p3 is not usa made.

the country of origin option is fairly new, and still a work in progress. there are lots of knives on the site, and it just takes time to input every one.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but there has never been a production run of the Police model that was made in the USA.

In the catalog, all USA made Spydercos say, Made in Golden Co. If it doesn't, most likely it's Japan made. The Tenacious is made in China, and the Sage is made in Taiwan. I think the "S" model is also made in Taiwan. The entire byrd line is made in China.

You can always ask us here about any particular model, and we'll be glad to help you out! :D

And the fixed blades are made somewhere in Europe? I know they use the N690 steel, some of them, anyway.

A fairly easy way is to look at the steels used (while somewhat inclusive, some are generally only used in non-USA-made models).

Course, since they DO say where they're from generally on the knife, in the catalog, and on the website... ;).

But to make sure, just buy them and look at the mark near the tang.

Thanks for all of the information guys. I will sort it all out when I get ready to buy one like today when I pick up the D2 Para USA made.

I think no-one mentioned that you can look at the type of steel?

Or is that not as fool proof as I thought?

CPM-S30V (or any CPM) = USA
VG10 = Japan
8cr13mov = China

Sage is S30V and made in Taiwan, but yes, that's normally a good indicator.

CPM anything is normally USA made, VG-10/H1/ZDP is Japan (Seki), Alphabet soup is China.

No, actually the CF Sage uses CPMS30v and is outsourced to Taiwan. :o

EDIT: dang Josh K beat me too it :)
