USAF Mod for WS (pic heavy)

Better having my knife smelling like dessert then having ME smell like dessert! :D

I've heard about certain foods being harsh on the pallet but I think that would bring that concept to a whole new level.:D

Come to think of it, forget about the bear proof food containers people should just keep their food in a bag full of razorblades after one or two run-ins like that I think Smokey would start to leave the picnic baskets alone.;)

Amigo, that's just cold. ;-)

Now I just need to mod the sheath to hold a firesteel in addition to the sharpening stone :)

you must have been reading my mind. I've been thinking about how to do that too. I'll try to get a mock-up of what I was thinking later today.

Here is my idea for adding a firesteel to my "new" knife
firesteelmockup.jpg

My plan is to simply take a small strip of leather and make a nice tight loop that is just a little to small for the steel (I'm going to get a LMF Army for this) then wet form it to the steel and rivet the loop to the sheath.
Thoughts?

Awsome

I know im allways looking for something like this, my waist pack is a major need for me, but I like having a fixed. I stared wearing mine under my left arm, drawn with my right hand.

On the side like that it might be too prone to catch on things? How about mounting it along side the stone pouch? A little more compact and protected there I'm thinking.

Good point, I was going for the super simple easy...but as with most things in life that's not the way to; a little more time and effort usually pays off in the end.
Do maybe something more like this

I'd place the firesteel loop on the other side of the sharpener holder. That way, whenever you're rumbling through brush that can grab at you, branches slide over the firesteel instead of getting hung up on it and yanking.

Other'n that, I like the idea and think you've done a great job with the mods.

Oh yeah, for those who think it'd be better to smooth out the saw back, it'd be a simple thing to smooth out a couple inches of the blade's spine by taking a Dremel tool to it. It'd take a few minutes and, as long as one doesn't keep the Dremel running for too long, the blade's heat treat won't be messed with, either.

I thought of that after I posted it up and looked at it and went d@mn should have put that on the other side, and since I've been processing wedding photos all day I really just didn't want to do anymore photoshop work tonight.

And thank you.

Other side?! Ah, you're all a bunch if right-handers :grumpy:

Joking of course, looks like a nice mod :D

I have a AFSK that was given to me when I was in the Army during the Gulf War back in 90 and 91. I love that knife dearly. I wont ever modify it but yours looks great. I have a TAK but I find it to heavy to carry and the sheath sucks. I know im gonna get fragged for this but I usually carry my Buck 119 in the woods for survival. Now what I did to the sheath is take a peice of Bycicle tire tube and cut it to size and slip it over my sheath now I have a magnisium fire starter and also a sharpening rod on my sheath and it works great. I just thought I would share the tire tube trick with you Bare Rib..

Great modification to that knife. I bet the performance is twenty times what it was stock.

Thanks for the bike tire suggestion Wildone.
As far as being "fragged" for carrying a Buck 119; while that may happen in other forums that only taught the "super knives" and say anything else is crap, I don't think you'll find that here. The Buck family of knives seem to be pretty respected here and the 119 comes up quite often (with only good things said.) Also here in WSS folks seem to realize that it is different strokes for different folks. We have people who love and carry the $10 Moras to the $500 Busses.
Are you new to WSS?

Thanx; and it sure is if the quick little tests I did here are any indication. I can actually fuzz a stick now, does great with notching, it even battons better now, and as said before it now feels good in my hand too.

It might be easier to rivet the fire steel holder to the flap of the stone pouch.

Or buy one of those pull apart key rings and put the fire steel on one end and attach the other end to the sheath.

Exactly the same modifications as I have done to mine. Have even used it as a wood chisel to cut a hole through the log door of my log cabin. Built that with my M-43 HI kukri. modified AF is still my walk around knife.
