USCG Counter-Terrorism Units. What Blade?

Very, I repeat, VERY rarely do any of us get issued any specialized gear that has not been approved for mass use through out the service. Items such as knives, multi-tools, flashlights, etc. are typically an out of pocket expense for the the member since any gear issued is exclusively dependent on how much the unit is funded or provided by HQ/Area/District. In the case of most USCG units, its almost always below what is required to operate which means no surplus for high speed, custom/semi-custom, special metal, items. Situation sucks but we deal and get the job done...

Thats kinda BS. Seems to me the CG should be getting the best stuff. They are the ones protecting OUR seas/citizens afterall. Not to take anything away from other service members but you'd think we would be looking out for the interests of OUR HOMELAND FIRST. Just my .02.

Every service has their mission and gets funded according to the powers that be. The CG has historically been under funded and long considered the the bastard child of the five armed services. Despite the increase in responsibility for Homeland Security (with no loss in total missions prior to 9/11) and demonstrated efforts during the hurricanes our budget was still cut by a couple billion... Ok, I need to get of the soapbox now (RANT OFF). We will continue to accomplish our mission and perform our jobs.

But hey this is beginning to get off track, bring on the folder and EU-17  :D and have a drink for President's Day!

when i was in service (85-92, had to buy our own gear. they issued m-9 bayonet (?). any way, it was a pos. so i picked up a bmf. not sure if things have changed. from some of the posts by troops "in country", seems they buy their own too. (same sh*%, different time)

what ever you choose to give your son, i'm sure it will be a high quality blade.

good luck to your son in the vetting process, as long as he never gives up, he will do just fine. sometimes the biggest, fastet, strongest don't make it. they are looking for team players who will never quit.

If only I knew what you were talking about.:p

I am purely speculating on this idea folks. My son was welcomed into the first stages of training/testing recently, and it will begin in the following months. I will truly be searching out something for him even if he doesn't make the wash. I'm proud of him for serving in his current station at Port Huron. His CO recently sent me notice that my boy was being awarded for bravery for going into the St. Clair River to rescue a fellow Coastie. He should have had a Busse to cut the ice.;)

If you come up with something that needs some pants and would fit in a large Spec-Ops survival sheath (coyote/tan) let me know. As an ex Coastie I would be happy to donate this to the cause.

Yeah, probably doesn't help any now that they're not under the DOD anymore and now Homeland security. All funding going to soldiers fighting overseas and expensive aircraft and such.

I know of a young fellow in the SEALs who is using an old school 1/4" DCBB Satin Jack. I haven't talked to him since he was deployed last year, but I am sure it is serving him well.

Thank you for the offer! I am not sure what I will send him but the offer is appreciated.

As I understand it, they (USCG) are allowed a max blade length of 6" on the boats. I may send him my BATAC after I receive my ganzaa score.

I'd like to have a satin NARK, but I let them slip by me.

Yeah, and the strange thing is that they were very limited in number (6 or 8 per each color of 4 or 6 colors of micarta, if I recall correctly) yet they remained available on the Company Store for a long time. Wish I had bought two!
