Use a mischmetal ferro rod / firesteel

Thanks Grampa..... I'm gonna order some of Storl's rods I think.... good price and they seem to spark easily..... using that little tip on one of his monster ferros would extend the life indefinately, I think....... lol

Rick let me know how the technique in your video works with the misch metal rod. I never had luck with that technique with mine. I now use it all the time on my regular ferro rods though.

can you post the actual video code? i dont see links, and i have to put the code in my pda to see it.

That little tin knife that Stomper makes is a perfect striker and it's FREE.

Well it comes free with the other knife he makes for you, but that isn't bad.

I have seen some pretty cool forged strikers that seem to work really well. I think anything that will allow you to put the proper pressure down on the firesteel while not flexing should work especially well.

The SAK awl is a little tricky, but it just requires a slightly different angle. Nice video! (And then I had to order one with a wenge handle...bastid.)

HAHAHA! You got sucked into the vortex...I was just looking at that same one a few minutes ago. Trying hard to resist!!!

Why did I just order another ferro rod? I already have 3 or 4. But that wenge handle just looked so nice...and I have the perfect striker to go with it, a JK tin knife! Hey, could be worse, I could collect something expensive like....knives....:o

From what I understand, the alloys that make up firesteels can only ever reach a max temp of 5500F in controlled settings so there is really no such thing as a hotter ferro rod.

They can however lower the ignition temperature using certain alloys which may be why Light My Fire steels work so effortlessly compared to most other manufacturers.

Sweet vid, Storl

Those ferros really throw a good spark.... have you seen my vid on extending the life of your ferro? You might find it neat.

Rick

nice tip and thank you my friend for not filling your vid with blab just good info.

Got my order from going gear on monday. All I have to say about the ferro is Wow!. I got the one with the capsule, and I've never had a rod that worked like this one. Not just sparks but showers of molten metal that will stay red hot for up to 5-10 seconds. I almost burned a hole in my rug when I first tried it, I guess I should have known what to expect from the video, but I didn't really believe it. I also got one of the match cases and a small keychain capsule. It was great that they threw in a free keychain whistle too, I guess I had missed those while placing my order. The match case is awsome, and I love the capsule and whistle too. I was wondering though if it would be possible to make a ferro rod with the matchcase on it instead of the scuba bottle? This would give alot more room and a nicer handle. I would love one with the matchcase if at all possible.

Anyway, I loved my first order from them, and I'm sure it won't be my last, especially with how impressed I was with the ferro rods. It's always nice to support a forrumite. Keep up the good work.

I said the same thing before about these rods. I could not believe how long the molten globs burned. I actually started to time the things and my longest was almost 10 seconds. After I posted that, I said I bet no one will believe me, but it is the truth. I am glad someone else posted how well it works for them.

They are pretty tough to. I dropped mine, a 3/8'' x 4'', onto concrete from about 6' high and it survived. I did it 10 times. I then dropped it on a pipe so it hit in the middle of the rod to see if it would break, and again from 6' high it survived. It now has a couple dents in the rod, and around the edges of the end, but that's it. They seem to give and not be so brittle.

I've had mine for two days and I'm still REALLY excited. It's taking alot of self control to not go and order a half dozen more of the rods, I'm gonna have to pace myself, but I just don't think that I can ever be happy with my old ferro's again.

These are the ferro's I want with me when my life depends on them.

It almost looks like you could skip the tinder altogether and go straight to igniting a fuzz stick :D Anyone try this?

Maybe if you really showered on the metal, but that would be somewhat wasteful of your ferro rod. With this rod and a PJCB you're set.

Self control is for sissies!

Just kidding, I'm not going anywhere (I hope).

I've tried it on a fuzz stick, and it is possible, but definitely a lot more work. You have to have really fine curls or scrape the stick to make the bark and wood fibers fluffy.

Nice to have it as on option though
