Use & Abuse E.D.C

I don't know how I would feel about using a Benchmade Bedlam to open up a bag of soil with rocks, sticks, dirt, etc...

I use a Spyderco Delica to open bags of dirt and rocks.

The edge gets all dinged up, but it straightens out when sharpened.

The Delica/Endura is the most knife you can get for $60, and super solid with the steel liners and VG10 blade.

What are the two blades at the bottom of your picure?

The one on the right is Ka-bar ZK Tanto, a pretty crappy hanlde but the blade is solid. The one on the left is a Timberline Kelly Worden folder, a really good economic folder.

I carry a crkt minimalist for things that make me think im going to mess up my knives, got mine for $20 so i dont worry about messing it up

I wont buy a knife unless im going to use it, If it doesn't get used it gets sold, I bought 2 striders in a month now and i carry one of them daily , or an emerson, or my spyderco gayle bradley I've downsized a lot I have 5 knives now that i carry and use , dropping down from about 15, I prefer quality over quantity, and plus with the warranty you get on striders, emersons , and even spydercos I have no problem using them for what they were meant for, sure i break down boxes with my strider and might hit a staple with the edge, but their HT is amazing and with a light touchp on the edge pro the edge is back to normal. Nothing wrong with budget knives at all, don't get me wrong, I carried enduras, and delicas and other budget friendly knives for years and they never let me down. :) I can honestly say I've never had a knife fail on me when doing what a knife was meant for which is cutting, sure I've dulled and chipped some edges, but I've only had one knife fail on me and it cost 200.00 and was like that brand new out of box from the dealer, I knew the lock was crap, but still used the knife because I used it for cutting nothing else, I eventually sent it in to its maker got it fixed up and she was gtg after that.

For me a Griptilian would be my beater. A grip can take a lot of abuse if that is the position you are in. You can even open bags of rocks and not hurt the blade if you take a second to do it instead of just stabbing and ripping open. Now if my job was to open bags of rocks all day long as fast as I can, then honestly I would have a razor knife that I could just pop new blades in. Unfortunately, I won't ever be able to do that kind of work for more than a couple minutes because of health problems so I don't have to worry about working my knives that hard. An EDC can handle most anything. Than said, I do usually carry a couple knives and one is usually older that I don't mind working a little harder. Right now that is a Sprint run Para 2 that isn't replaceable and was $200 New. But it has seen a lot of use and I wouldn't think twice about pushing it. I also carry the M4/CF forum Rift which I would push hard if I had to but it sees easier tasks and food prep most of the time.

I think at some point we all graduate to a certain level where we consider a certain price range 'cheap' and those are the knives we are willing to push. When I first started with knives I had a lot that were less than 50 bucks. Now I can't remember the last time I carried a knife that was less than a hundred bucks. I don't have much money because I'm disabled, but I have come to appreciate knives at a certain level and I'm willing to spend the occasional extra money on them.

I got so tired of pussyfooting around worrying about my knives that I started using them, and lo and behold they managed to not disintegrate. I do try to maintain good usage habits and use the proper tool for the job, but if I need to cut off a root below grade them ima do it. Of course that's big talk from someone who doesn't own a single >$200 knife, I guess, but then again if I jacked up some of these (my GEC Conductor, my LE Phat Bob, my Wohlwend necker) I'd be crushed so it still kinda counts haha. I'm really not into carrying multiple knives, so I use what I got on me.

Battle scars on my toys (knives, trucks, my lady!) are beautiful to me, though, so ultimately I don't worry about it.

Hmm, interesting responses. My biggest issue would be having to restore the edge and/or clean out the dirt. I just find using a cheap for dirtier jobs to best fit my needs. I still enjoy the good use of a quality blade.

Spyderco salt. My daughter was in a shoe store that had put a wire security tag on a pair of shoes she bought. They had no way to get that damn thing off. I had left my trusty leatherman in the hotel room, so the Salt took care of it. I just had to touch up the blade when we got home.

I value all my knives as tools and try to avoid beating them to death if I can. I'll never deliberately tax a knife beyond it's capabilities unless it's absolutely necessary. That being said, I select my knives based on their usefulness, and there's not a one in my collection that's not been dinged a time or two. So, I guess they're all beaters in a way. But the Leatherman takes the hardest beating of all :P Love that thing.

I carry an edc knife
a swiss army knife
a ps4 squirt
and a beater knife

EDC can be anything that has a pocket clip, I prefer victorinox for the SAK, it has been a compact lately.
My beater knives though, I've always turned to the CRKT M16 with the auto lawks. I've never broke one of those, I end up giving them away and getting a new one here and there. It can take quite a bit of abuse, light prying twisting scraping and what have you. and the 8cr13 is soft enough that it doesn't take 3 weeks to sharpen it again. I have a few other knives that I bought with abuse in mind but none of those see any kind of use comparable to the M16's I have had.
