Use Comet for polishing/cleaning

HI Uncle Bill, talking of ash,when my wife lived in Fiji,her family would clean their teeth using ash from the cooking fire also for cleaning the cooking pots so it should work on a khukri.I use steel wool for cleaning off rust. you can usually buy it off furniture restorers.
