"Use it or lose it"

I acknowledge my hoarding instinct, and embrace it. Every other area of my life is under control, so I allow myself this obsession. So no, I feel no compulsion to send them to a better place. They are happy right where they are.

You are not alone.......

My personal policy is I won't buy a knife that I wouldn't use....

....if I needed to.

Then I buy them, and put them in the safe until I wear out my excellent users.
If I needed to is the operable condition for me. Knives almost never wear out. Loosing is more likely.

I stopped buying knives that I felt I would never use whether it be because they cost too much (hence I shouldn't have bought it in the first place) or just for the fun of it (impulse buys still happen). So, I only buy ones I feel I might use and pretty sure I will like them. That doesn't mean I will use them however. Hence, I won't buy Ivory or Mammoth ivory any more (even though I really like both for knife handles) because I know I won't use them. I almost bought a few customs that I considered "high dollar" ($1000+ zone) and then stepped back and considered what I was doing.... throwing more money down a hole.

Added or is it Addled: I own a lot of art. I display a lot of art work in my home and I enjoy it. But I have thousands of dollars tied up in art work that I have no room to display or feel like framing. I am not going this route with knives, but I have sort of to a point. Same is true of firearms..... Fishing gear..... lots of money tied up in that too, but with fishing gear, I pretty much insist on using what I consider to be near the best based on my experience. But what about all the extra rods and reels I have in reserve....?

Um wow. If you decide on selling some would love to have a crack at some.

Generally speaking if I dont use something for a while and I want something new I try to make myself sell something to replace the new knife. I usto have way to many knives and i'm down to a modest fifty or so. Once knives start to cost around 1000$+ I told myself I should really start letting some of the ones that "sure I like" but "dont need and its redundant". Granted I own multiples of the same knives ...some new ... hey whatever.

I’ve been slowly but surely moving into a new place and I keep finding old knives I thought were gone. Maybe I built up some sentiment to them but my tastes change so much sometimes I really enjoy going back to a knife I haven’t touched in years

This is good practice that I should follow too. But just wonder how you manage to keep ~50 knives for no more than $1000 - that is about $20 per knife.

Believe you misunderstood his post SE. Believe he inferred some of the ~50 cost him $1000+...

I only do customs that are very special; otherwise, I get 1) designs I like, 2) representative samples of innovation or awesome engineering, 3) special examples of real quality, be it materials or construction, and 4) anything truly unique or cool in an appealing fashion

My range is generally mid-tech and mid to mid-high level production. There is enough there to satisfy my criteria.

But they all must be ones I would be willing to depend on if they had to be used...I don't keep any that wouldn't hold up in use. The fact that I don't use most is because I simply can't wear out my working knives with EDC use.

I typically keep my collection down to just a rotation of about 10-15 at one time. If I see something I want, I'll sell something or trade. It helps me not spend too much money and I dont have stuff not getting used
