Use philosophies that annoy you...

Good post. I find it funny I have to label my videos as abuse (well some are abusive but not really) to suit the masses.
People think knives are delicate flowers that need taking care of but to be honest as long as you use proper judgement you'll be fine. (aka don't try to pry with a toothpick of a knife).

I'm probably one of the people he's talking about :P

here's my thing, if you know you want/need a thick knife, me saying to get an opinel probably isn't going to sway you.

however among new knife users these days there seems to be a huge misconception that only thick, over built folders can take "hard use", and that is often why I reply the way I do. I think many of these people might be a lot happier if they find a good, thin knife at the start and realize how well it handles hard tasks. So when I see a guy say he needs a 6mm thick blade because it will see a lot of hard use cutting cardboard and maybe trimming some wood, I will throw my two cents in.

I just really hate the whole marketing and hype behind modern over built folders. I don't hate the knives or people who use them though. I just try to dispel some misconceptions. Lord knows I have certain knife preferences that don't always translate to any realistic benefit.

this is the internet, I think you kind of have to realize people will always go off on their own tangents haha.... Like when I'm talking about getting a vintage spyderco model mostly for its history, prestige, and thin profile yet I have people coming in telling me to get a ZT instead, which has none of those things. I know what I wanted so I just brush those comments off.

Well, if it is not an abuse, then what is it? Why people get annoyed when others call the abuse abuse? If you believe that a knife can and should be abused and you buy knives that you believe can withstand it to the right degree: why are you bothered? You are not alone there you can buy a knife from a manufacturer who targets that particular user group and it's it!
If people stop arguing that abusing knives is actually cool: that probably will be the end of of others "pushing their own philosophy on them"! If you look at the forum or go to youtube, you are quite unlikely to see a topic there named like "Look how I do not abuse my knife..", or "Recommend light-use folder..." So I wonder who is imposing on whom!

I will say though, there are thick knives and then there are stupid-thick knives. I honestly think that no one needs a 1/2" thick shallowly saber-ground folding knife though. :D

It gets down to the mentality of people now days. I.e. "why would I put more effort into doing this task using a tool, when I can use another tool that will require less energy to complete it." ....... people are just lazy

Are you kidding me? I hope this post was made with a sarcastic intent. I like my Striders more than my Militaries at this point, but the military goes through everything much more efficiently. I use my Strider more because I feel it can take anything and I just happen to like it more. I would never call someone that desired highly efficient cutting lazy; that's just absurd. At that point, why even use a tool at all. "I break down cardboard boxes with my hands. You tool users are just lazy."

"This is steel (holds up broken knife), this is wood (holds up a chunk of wood). This (holds up broken knife again) should always win, regardless." This comment annoys me much more than it should; I really hate to see people destroy knives, but I hate even more when said people blame the knife for their own ignorance, poor technique, or simply using the knife in a way it wasn't designed for. If you want to split wood, fine; use a knife designed for it. Judge a knife based on how well it performs tasks it was designed for, not on your own misuse of it.

I don't think it's people pushing their philosophies on people, it's teaching guys new to the knife community what the limits of a knife are and where the knife excels and falls short.

Don't toothpick with a prybar of a knife either.

Agreed. Just because a something can do something that it wasn't made to do doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to do it well. I think it's fine to carry a big ESEE Junglas to use as a hatchet/prybar, but don't pretend that it's the best tool for something like shaving, but also don't be discouraged from using it in that way if you can and it's the only thing on your person that can.
