Use the hook on a SAK?

Here is the deal. I EDC a Tinker, have for years. All the tools on it get regular use. The one thing I miss having on it is scissors. The Super Tinker has all the Tinker stuff, plus the scissors and the hook on the back side, located between the awl and the Phillips driver.

Who uses this hook? What is it useful for in real life? I am curious, because if I get the Super Tinker, I'd like to take full advantage of the tools it contains, and the hook is a puzzlement to me.

Thanks,
Bill

I don't use the hook much myself but read that it was originally designed for carrying parcels wrapped with string. Just hook the string and you're good to go. Not may parcels are wrapped that way anymore though.
It's also good for tightening up the laces on shoes, boots, skates, etc.

Carrying plastic grocery bags.

Okay. I currently use my hands for that and it has not been a problem. I can see the string carry, as string tends to cut into the fingers if it's a heavy package. As was noted by another poster, the use of string-wrapped packages is seriously on the wane in the USA.

I dont ever use the hook, but I have heard that it works well for lifting pots/ cans off of a fire -by grabbing the handles (or improvised wire handles).

The small classic SAK has scissors if that is all you want.

I imagine that if I was collecting firewood in the brush, it might be nice to tie it into bundles with paracord -then carry two bundles under my arms and one bundle with the hook

I saw a TV ad that showed a guy using the hook to retrieve his eyeglasses that had fallen into a toilet.

I hate the hook. The Compact would be the perfect SAK for me if they replaced the useless hook with a reamer.

I have sharpened it so the hook works like a miniature gut hook. I use it on preferably small fish. Works as well for sharpening pens and cutting strings :).

The hook can also be used to untie knots. It can also be used to let it hang on a wire so that it makes a vertical line, a variation on a leveling instrument. Just use your imagination and you'll find many applications for your SAK tools. :-)

I use the hook as a conversation piece.

Tell people it's my backup plan for escaping burning buildings via zip line.

I chamfered the edges and use it to pull my fishing knots (loops) tight. Much easier on my fingers and gets the knots really tight.

You heard correctly

I use it to lift hot pot lids and hot pot bails off camp fires or stoves, and grills off barbques

I've used the hook to tighten the laces on my skates, but that's about it.

Good for snaking wires thru various objects too. I've also used it to hold/tighten 550 paracord when lacing/strapping stuff down.

All the responses so far have been good. I used to hate the hook, but every once in a while a situation arises where it becomes useful in an unconventional way.
