Used Craftsman 2x42 Grinder Question

After reading all the positive posts about the Craftsman 2x42 grinder for beginners, I managed to pick up a used one off craigslist for $35. It didn't come with a platen, and I'll buy a replacement from Sears. More importantly, it makes a strange noise when I run it.

The noise is like a set screw bouncing around in a tin can. I'm fairly sure it isn't bearing related, because if you stop the grinder by hand it will continue to bounce around for several seconds.

How worried should I be about this? Should I just consider it a disposable grinder? It doesn't look straightforward to take apart, but if I'm likely to be able to fix it by doing so, I'll try. Is it worth disassembling?

Thanks,
Alex

Well, if no one has any insight, I'll get started with my screwdriver and see if I can find anything.

Id say if you don't want to buy a new one, might as well give it a shot. Let us know how it goes.

I've got it mostly broken down. The lower wheel is completely frozen to the motor axle, but once I can get it knocked loose I think I'll have the motor endcaps off.

I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get some penetrating oil and hope that helps.

I'm quite curious about what I'll find bouncing around in there.

Well, the drive wheel has been soaking in penetrating oil with me carefully hammering on and off for 6-7 hours with no luck.

I'm starting to think I won't get this thing off without damaging the shaft.
