Used my knife in a real life emergancy situation last night

Yeah, I have a Spyderco Assist w/glass breaker in my Explorer.
I've been carrying an Assist for a while now. Haven't had a chance to cut anyone out of a seatbelt, though. :)

I have experimented with cutting cord and weeds and small branches with the blade half closed and my fingers on the blade-back grooves, like pruning shears. Works pretty well. i wonder if it would do seatbelts as well. That would be safer than having a fully open blade in an already dangerous situation. of course, it's got a blunt blade tip anyway.

Too fine a motor skill, IMHO. I've made the motion to open an one-handed knife about a BILLION times in my lifetime. I bet I could do it hanging upside-down with gasoline dripping in my eye. ;)

Man, what a thrill experience. Glade you are properly equiped. I own so many knives than i should, when a situation like, you are just glade that you remember to carry one. Care to tell me what kind of car you were driving? Though the sit belt could not release, but it is one tough M***erF***er machine. It protected you well, i must say.

I was driving a Jeep Wrangler. I must say that I was quite impressed with how well it kept together. I guess there is something to be said for vehicles with roll cages. :D

As far as cutting myself, like I said, I had pretty much weasled out of the top of the seat belt and was basically standing on the pasenger window when I cut it. I don't think there was much tension on it anymore but it was still jammed up. Since I wasn't really falling anywhere once it let loose, chances of cutting myself were pretty slim.

I was thinking about all the blunt tip "rescue" knives out there as I was doing it though. LOL. I'm half ass hanging in a Jeep that just rolled 1 3/4 times down a 20 ft bank, trying to cut my seat belt off and thinking "You know, they make knives specifically for this, I should really have one of those"

How's that for a knife nut?

Glad you're OK!

I'm sending this thread to my mother and girlfriend, so they stop complaining about the emergency stuff I put in their cars.

Good idea.

I wasn't in any immediate danger, well once I stopped rolling anyway, but if I had crashed into a river instead of a field, or if there had been gasoline leaking or something, it could have been a different story. It sucked being caught in the seatbelt the way it was, I can only imagine what it would have been like had there been impending danger approaching.

Good story and glad you are okay. Take it easy next couple of days. It is common to become sore well after the accident.
