I found a grinder wilton square that runs with all the wheels for 400.00 bucks ...this will be my first knife making purchase..any input on these would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kris

Yes grab it.. Very fast machine but very useful when you get the knack for it.

did you get it?
Got it today, talked him down to 350 with all the attachments. It has a large 8 inch soft wheel and 4 other attachments. It is really clean he bought new in 1979 for race car building and didn't use it much. It seems to run smooth. My question is what abrasives should I get and where should I get them? The main motor is a 1hp leeson RPM is 1725...60hz. The main wheel is 10 inches (the one directly connected to the motor). Is this going to be a good fit to start knife profiling?

I just looked at your reply in another thread and went with your recommendations...I couldnt find the hermes j flex 240...
Here is what I got.

2x72-50 R980Y Blaze Plus Ceramic $8.50 $8.50
2x72-120 A160 Trizact CF Gator Structured Abrasive $6.35 $6.35
2x72-240 A65 Trizact CF Gator Structured Abrasive $6.10 $6.10
272-0400-A45CF Trizact CF Gator Structured Abrasive $6.35 $12.70
2x72-400 RB406JF Aluminum Oxide $2.75 $5.50
2x72-600 RB515X Silicon Carbide Cork $7.15 $7.15
3M Half Facepiece Respirator Assembly with 3M Particulate Filters $14.95

With a ten inch drive wheel that will be screaming crazy fast. I would suggest swapping out for a 4, 5, or 6 inch drive wheel so that you bring the belt speed down to a more manageable level. It's a cheap mod but should make the grinder far easier to use and more forgiving of slight errors in technique

Edit. I ran a few numbers and I guess belt speed would be around 4500 sfpm.

Another alternative would be to shop around for a 220 v DC motor with a variable speed control, these allow a wide range of belt speeds with a variety of contact wheels and one drive wheel. Something to consider is any change in the size of the drive wheel will affect the size of the abrasive belt you can use with this grinder.

Looks like i opened a can of worms on this one...i think i am going to go visit the local electric motor company...WHAT SPEEDS SHOULD I SHOOT FOR?

4581 sfpm is not unusually fast by todays standard. it would be great to slow it down with a multistep pulley setup or 3 phase motor/vfd setup.

The best thing would be to get a 3 phase 220V motor with a shaft size that matches your drive wheel hub. Then, run it with a VFD. This is how I have my Square Wheel rigged, with a 2 hp Leeson. Runs well that way.

My square wheel was purchased Used in New condition last year. I think I need to do what Salem has done with his. It would make this machine really that much more useful just because it has the 1.5 and 3 inch wheel platen flip it over for convex .

Not trying to hijack this thread but Salem when you went to the Variable speed did you have the stock drive wheel or the slow down wheel ? I just want to get a feel for how the conversion would go with the large wheel I have on it now.

I had a slow down wheel before I ran it by VFD. When I got the VFD and 3 phase motor, the motor shaft matched the original drive wheel so I put that back on. It works fine with the 1725 rpm motor that runs it now.
