Pack, check you email. And yes, he was born in 98.
Folks, thank you all so much for your help. I figure for all of you help, I owe you a response as to what I have decided to do, pending what Pack Rat has to say to me by email.
First, let me tell you, my son has no shortage of knives. I think he is developing my weakness or sickness. Second, he has a Buck 501 we bought him on our first trip ever to Wyoming. I asked him why he doesn't use it. His response is "because I don't want to scratch it". He carries a beater Schrade and Gerber for the most part. So he does not want to scratch the only Buck he owns. I have discussed with him to great extent the Buck 118 and he tells me over and over he likes it, but he doesn't want to scratch it. This gives me a bit of cover to save it, but is something I will have to deal with, as I believe knives are for using.
I have him a 4 dot Buck 110 that is mint also. As best as I can tell, it isn't worth as much as the Buck 118. I am planning on giving him the 110 for his 9th Birthday. I saw a Buck 118 in mint go from $33 almost overnight $83 plus shipping the other day, and there was no proof from the photos that it was as old as the one I have. Did you hear that Joe Houser? Did you hear that Buck Knife Company? Almost $100 for a 118.
I only collect users, but may start collecting a few fixed. I'm thinking of taking the advice of buying him even another 118, but one that is already scratched and putting this one in a case. I still don't know for sure, and dang it, I might pull this sucker out and start slicing away.
We have a watermelon sitting on the kitchen counter. I asked my son do you know what I would like to do? He said, "Yep, get that buck and start slicing". I told him "Yep".
Thanks again for you all's excellent advice. With his own quicky knife personality, I think giving him a knife that is scratched or buying a common 105 or 119 might be the best ticket. He really likes the 102's. That way he knows he is scratching something that is common and can be replaced or one that has already been scratched.
Nothing is for sure though and a lot depends on him. So the decision is to put off making a decision and not use it for the moment and see what his wants and needs become.
