usgi canteen based kit what's missing

All these ideas and kits remind me of a story. I heard this one second hand, and I am posting it on the internet, so:rolleyes:
There is an owner of a company who, at times showed folks around his old stomping grounds in Alaska. At one point in time, he had several dog mushers w/ him, and they were all traveling on horses. It is cold and snowy, and it is getting late. The owner stops, and tells the rest to make camp. The owner takes the saddle off his horse, pulls out a couple wool blankets, and goes to sleep...leaving the quys in the Gore-Tex, PolarTec, SuperDuper Gear on their own.
While they probably made camp just fine, it shows that you often don't need a whole lot just to get by.
Make sure what you do have will work for you, and that you know how to use it to the best effect.
Figure out if you are trying to get a kit for EDC, for when you are out in the boonies, or when you are actually hiking and camping/hunting. Size your kit and stock it accordingly.
You would actually be better off, if you were stranded, w/ the few items carried on your person than the bag of stuff you did not bother to carry.
If you are planning on being out, then you probably will have the proper gear, and would not neccesarily need all the scalpels, snare wire, etc.
I am sorry for the long post, I guess my point is simply that a person needs to decide on where and when they will have their PSK before they start putting the thing together, as it makes a difference in what the kit would contain and how large it is.:)
