USGI Waterproof Match Holder?

I picked up some small things at a recent gun show, signal mirror, ear plugs, can openers and waterproof match holder. I was putting strike anywhere matches in it and noticed a little metal bar across the bottle. Does anyone know what purpose this serves?

It is indeed a mini-ferro rod. Took one of the p38's and got spark! I'd hate to have to use it. It is a last resort type of thing.

Its a small flint. I have one of those as well. mines stuffed with PJ cotton balls.

Don't depend on that flint on the container, they have a nasty habit of falling off.

I've never had much luck actually striking those. You almost need the sharp edge of a knife on some just because you have to shave down plastic to get at the flint.

The USGI match cases are good and dependable. I like my K&M myself. All the plastic cases I've tried I either end up losing the cap or getting pissed at the retention device. Plus with the K&M cases, you can glue a piece of sandpaper (I used wet/dry emery cloth) to the inside of the lid so you always have a dry striking surface.

From my experience, the USGI and K&M cases are the only ones worth using. Most of the other models I've encountered are cheap and flimsy.
