Hi Greg,
Its actually 12 gauge!
28 is really rare here, .410 and 20 gauge are common. 12 gauge are by far the most common in Australia.
The ammo is Victory 9s, my favorite skeet loads. I shot Winchester in competition for years but the cost became too prohibitive. The Victorys are a soft sweet load just the same.
Just a little about the Merkel. When I first bought it, it was choked full and 3/4 , I was never happy with the tight chokes.
I sent the gun to a master gunsmith in Melbourne here, and had the chokes relieved to ½ and ¼.
Also had the automatic safety disconnected as it was a pain every time I fired the gun. The safest way to handle a S/S or a U/O as far as Im concerned is to have it broken, and close it before the shot
Apparently auto safety is common on continental guns.
Perhaps it is different in Australia, but here in the states, shotgun shells are color coded to some extent. 20 gauge shells are most often yellow, to distinguish them from 12 gauge shells. My first thought was 20 gauge based on the shot shell color.
