Using a Light My Fire with your knife?

Not much to add, but chorus is appropriate :D

Hey Mick, what type of wood were you shaving in that second video in your post?

EDIT: Looking at the youtube title after posting, says its fatwood.

Would you say there are any woods that are similar to fatwood here in Aus?

I take the lazy way out and use the scraper that comes with it.

The scraper is designed for the firesteel and works great. I don't know why everyone wants to throw them away?

My Off the Map Bushcrafter is the only knife I have that seems to have a sharp enough spine to do a good job of throwing sparks with a firesteel, but regardless, I still carry the scraper attached to the steel.

I keep the scraper attached as well; I do insure the spine of my knife (F1) is sharp enough to throw sparks though as a fallback

I'd rather not use my knife for striking if I don't have too, but I don't like to have the striker flopping around either, so I just attached it to my sheath.

Like so....

This way it's there if I need it, and I get a bit of extra cordage that can come in handy too.:)

For the record the spines of all my mora knives can spark a firesteel.
They arn't finished by the factory, they are rough and actually somewhat concave.

G'day JCK

I admit I got lucky & had a generous friend from the US send me some :D

Whilst we have some that will exude flammable sap, we really don't have anything like Fatwood (ie resin impregnated wood).

We have some local sources of tinder with similar characteristics (eg waterproof, easily ignited, and burns hot), but they tend to be the barks rather than a type of wood.

If you have it in your area, Paperbark is a really usefull tree :thumbup:

Kind regards

You can use the choil on the Busse GW with a firesteel - it works.
The spines on factory Busses are not sharp enough to throw sparks unless you have one with the thumb notches (i.e. SAR 3).

A really sharp 90 degree spine can cut you - I sliced my thumb on a Fiddleback Forge knife by running it down the spine too hard. :o

Thanks! I tried it and it works GREAT!
