I believe a few guys like Nick Wheeler and Geno Denning use a surface grinder to taper the tangs on their blades -how's it done?

Do they use a tilt table?

Thanks!

measure the tang, subtract the final tang thickness that you want, devide by 2. Put a shim under the end of the tang that is the thickness of the last measurement and grind one side of the tang. flip the blade over double the shim thickness and grind the second side. be sure to block the blade with pieces of scrap so that it cannot move while grinding and you may want to shim the center of the tang so there is no bow to it. this works for single pieces. if you are making the same pattern alot you can get some magnetic parallels and grind the proper tapers on them. be sure to mark them one and two or you will get them mixed up and grind all of the taper on one side of a tang and have a crooked handle or you will have to bend it straight or toss it.
