using belt on diffrent belt sander

do u think u can use a 1X42 belt on a 2x42 inch belt sander with out any problem when putting a edge on a knife
 
Sure,

Lots of guys split belts and use them like that.
 
Yes, and you can use a 90" belt when running a large contact wheel on your 2X72, too.
