Using cell phones in Europe

I travel around a lot. Had the same problems. The Nexus 4 phone solved these problems for me.

And much of the info here doesn't apply any more. For one thing, Cingular doesn't even exist anymore (they were purchased by AT&T), and more importantly smartphones these days, even those purchased from carriers, can be unlocked and rooted/jailbroken (Android/iOS) and used with any carrier. Of course, doing so voids your warranty, but that's the price you pay (or don't pay, depending on you look at it) to get a phone that would cost several hundred dollars off-contract for $200 or less (or even free). "Dumb" phones these days can be flashed and used on different networks too, as long as it supports the bands the network operates on.

I was in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Holland last year. You can't get an unlocked pre-paid phone over there, bring one from the US. That, plus a great many other wrong recommendations, caused me to throw my Rick Steves book in the trash.
