Using Expensive Knives

I can say right up front that I've not going to spend tons of money on a knife that's not going get used as anything more than a very expensive paperweight. If I buy a knife for any amount, be it $50 or $500, it's going to get carried and used. I just can't see spending that kind of money on something that you're never going to use.

Use it, they're meant to be used. The only reason they're expensive is because of the materials and time/effort put into them. I hate when i'm at work, and at first trying to use their knife to cut something and it's like trying to rip those hard plastic boxes open with your teeth. When you pull your knife out and it cuts things like butter, you realize again, why you spent so much on a nice knife.

use it

I use mine, but have (wife's words) "way too many" knives so a lot of them lack carry time. If I could get my pimped out Valentine's-gift-from-my-wife Southard out of my pocket maybe I could get back to a rotation, at least.

Im thinking im gonna carry it as a back up fr a while and use it for the light stuff for now.
I gotta get used to it because this aint going to be my only one i just found out there's a store near me (about 15 min away) that sells all the stuff i love.
Thanks guys!

Have you even considered Kitchen knives? They probably get more use than 95% of any other design and good ones don't come cheap. Buy a $500 chefs knife and then you'll see just how much you use an expensive knife.

I saw a couple original Kramers sell at auction recently and you could see they'd been used. Still took the price out of my league.

I plan on getting a small sebenza w/micarta as a user! I recently bought the Wilson Combat Les George Eagle,Umnumzaan and the Starbenza and will carry on special occasions! Waiting for Wilson to make the 25.

Expensive to me is $150 or more, I'm just a college student and that's a lot to drop on another knife. I always use my knives, It doesn't matter how much they cost or how limited edition the knife is; I will carry it and use it.

I like using my expensive knives, and I like buying slightly used-looking knives. They have more character when they show signs of use.

To me, "expensive" means a knife that costs's more than other knives that will also generally do what I need it to do, most of the time, but have decided that the extra features are worth the money. I have no problem using an "expensive" knife, so long as it does what I need it to do. I believe the term is very subjective, and is different for each person.
A knife that is used regularly for daily chores becomes very familiar in the hand. When one knows exactly what it will do well, and not so well, it becomes safer to the hands of the owner, and, in the case of a combination utility/defensive tool, much more dangerous for the hands that raise against its owner.

Like my sig says, these knives are tools, not artwork. They were designed with a purpose. I use ALL my knives. Not abuse, just use. If I know that I'm going to be doing really tough work on a given day, I'll choose my knife accordingly. But I EDC EVERYTHING.

ive used an my xm-18 like it was a beater knife. i've cut some very hard to cut things with it and never hesitated one second since the day i got it. it took a while for me to get out of that way of thinking. when i got my spyderco sage, i babied it so much. one day i just thought "hey.. i have these knives for a reason, why don't i just use them? it is what they were designed for, after all". since then, i don't care how dirty or scratched up my knives get, no matter how expensive. they won't get beat up or dull nearly as fast as you think they will. a well built knife can take a huge beating and live longer than possibly you. it just makes them special in that i'm the only person with a knife that looks that way(the scratch patterns and wear spots and whatnot).

just my two cents

Over time the "expensive" barrier is a continual upward spiral.

$1000? Sure!

My new main EDC is a $500+ custom slip joint. That would have been crazy talk 10 years ago! Though I carried a $500 gun all the time!

Now, I see $2000 or $3000 slip joints and think, hey, I would carry that.
