Using Expensive Knives?

I'll start out by stating that, for my purposes, there are fixed blades that will drastically outperform a Dozier in the role of a hunter/skinner/utility/general outdoors knife. A Dozier is a fine knife. I've had a few and like them a lot. A nicely designed D2 blade, properly heat treated, is a great tool. A superbly designed, forged, differentially heat treated, convex or flat ground 52100 blade is a much better tool.

I'll take your word for it farmer if you tell me where you think the price point is and cite an example of a maker doing them (I was speaking of relatively small (<4" blade) at that point. The rest of your story was great too. Interesting ending actually, and Ed filling in even more history on that particular knife makes it all come full circle!

i use all expensive knives now

my edc is a tom mayo tnt and my fishing knife is a stellite blackwood hybrid small hunter.

they are both overkill for what i require of a knife ... but i like them ... so i use them

i will be sad if i drop one in the drink though :(

I have no idea how much I would pay for a user, but so far the most expensive knife that I have that gets used regularly is my Ed Fowler Pronghorn. The knife is such a joy to use that I just can't see myself leaving it in a drawer. What an absolute waste that would be.

Likewise, I have no qualms about using expensive customs. If anything, I tend to use my customs more than my production knives partly because I bought them to be used and made that expectation known to the knifemaker/dealer I got them from.

Art knives for me should not only look good, but stand up to regular use as well. Otherwise, I consider them to be worth less to myself, and if only for display, not worthy of even being called a knife.

Just my point of view,

The most i have spent is about 400.00 bucks, and i use it regularly...the main reason is i'm a victim of multiple expensive hobboes...I mountain climb...the gear is very expensive...I play on a paintball team...the coast of high end guns is staggering...I'm an avid photographer...we all no how expensive 35mm cameras can be...besides regular camping and collecting and using knives, i haven't had the option lately to spend more on a custom knife...even though i have been tempted...because no matter how much i spend, i wanna use it, with the intent in which it was designed...:D

Did i mention i also own a 1969 Charger R/T with a 426 Hemi, that gets my food money if necessary...:D

I totally use them, but don't abuse them. For example, wouln't take my Elishewitz or Snody for a rafting trip, but that is what my Wilson Tactical Model 2 is for (love that fixed blade - kind of grows into your hand). Wouldn't take TM2 on the water either - Nimravus or River Rescues released almost a year ago (eventually!) by BM are perfect for it.

Anyway, I am in many places and like my knives too much to lock'em up.

Farmer, that was a great story. I really enjoyed reading it.

I carry and heavily use a a Sebenza every day. At $300 it is not the most expensive knife out there, but not cheap either.

I like the way the knife cuts and feels and it makes me happy.

I also carry a SAK everyday (an aluminum handle pioneer) and it makes me very happy too, but only cost like $30.

For that, I would not say that one was a better value than the other.

One thing is for sure, If I buy a knife I am gonna use it. If I don't use it, out the door she goes.

I bought a very nice Battle Mistress (the old straight handle kind), the first thing I used it for was to cut some sod, right out of the box, then cleared out some saplings, used it to chop some food up for dinner.

Sure using it lowered the "collector" value, but it increased it "personal" value to me.

That was me asking Farmer where he would set the price point for functionally top-of-the-line knives (small fb) that were not otherwise "art knives". I set it at $200. He said that was too low, but never responded to my question... So I open it to everyone. Was I too low? Can someone actually point me to an example of a knife at $300 or $400 that will out perform (I'm not talking about exotic handle materials, or file work, or silver bolsters) as in out-cut and out-last something like a Dozier hunter? I say "something like" because I don't mean to point to B. D. and say that he is the be all/end all of "user knives". I know there are others just as good, maybe better, but from what I have found, their small hunter/utility knives also come in around $200. Am I wrong?

well i use my belguim browing hi-power as well as the mini 14, sks, s&w model 66 3" from the custom shop.etc, etc, i buy tools to use.

Matthew,
To name a few - hunters from: Jerry Fisk, Harvey Dean, Howard Clark, Bill Bagwell, J. R. Cook, Dave Ellis, Jerril Lambert, PJ Tomes, Jerome Anders, Big John Fitch for the hammer & anvil set and this is just only some of what is in my collection. I have a Simonich/Wegner Talonite fixed blade hunter that will cut with anything, plus hunters from D'Holder, Nolen bros., Hossum, Hendrix, Blackwell and others, plus a number of Randall's. Don't get me wrong Matthew I love and have the utmost respect for Bob D's knives having used one of his extensively but if you ever used Jerry Fisk's Sendero hunter or one of Harvey Dean's or any of the ones mentioned above you would know what I am talking about. :) :) :D

Bill
P.S. All of these are at a higher price-point - $300 & up - and all totally fuctional working knives.

..for my EDC. I could use a sharp stick too. but how much is my life worth?

My ability to protect myself depends on my wits and my confidence in my gun, and my knife. And I protect my family too.

They are worth the very best tools for the job I can find and afford.

I carry a Strider right now EDC. I am always in search of other great tools. The Sebenza is in my pocket at all times.

How much is your ____________ worth?

P.S. All of these are at a higher price-point - $300 & up - and all totally fuctional working knives.

Bob D's. hunting knives are mostly under $200, so I set the point there to account for others who might be close to him in price. Sounds like you would set the point around $400, not that much more, or are there users quantifiably better still out there in the $500-$1000 range?

Mathew , I love that signature line .
Is that something you came up or something you heard somewhere .

it's great !:D
