Using knife as prybar/screwdriver?

I believe this is the dumbest post I have read this week. Would you trust your car to a mechanic who changes spark plugs with a hammer? Socket, hammer, they're both tools, right? Either one should work, right?

I applaud your subtleness. :p

I believe in being prepared, and carrying only a single tool (knife) is not my idea of being prepared. Along the folder I carry a multitool, a prybar/wrench, a flashlight, a lighter, and a USB drive. The multitool has pliers, philips screwdriver, 3 sizes of flat screwdrivers, can opener, cap lifter, and a punchdown tool.

Do you actually carry all that on your person? I keep such things in my car (BOB) and in the home, but I can't picture ever needing a USB drive while I'm walking my dog or a flashlight for a lunch meeting.

Another way of looking at this. Most of us on here - like knives. Duh.
ToWit, Most of us like gadgets and tools. Another Duh.
The reason why You NEVER use your knife to screw(Umm) or your screwdriver to cut or either to pry IS,
Because those are activities which justify the purchase of (all together now) MORE Tools and Gadgets!!

yablanowitz, you should take care to craft your analogies before calling someone post dumb.

A knife to a mini-prybar is not the same as a hammer to a socket. Also the only thing at risk by prying is breaking is a 50 dollar knife, or if your analogy was correct, the mechanics hammer (rather then the spark plug threads). A better analogy would be whether or not you trusted a mechanic who used a gas pipe (cheater bar) over a ratchet rather then a breaker bar or strong arm. My answer... sure its his tools on the line not mine and its not going to destroy the project the tools are being used on, why should I care?

Nobody said something called a tool is = to all things called tools. The OP suggested in a pinch, you use your knife for something that it can probably handle although not specifically designed to do.

The hostility is unwarranted as well.

That may be how you interpreted the OP. That's not how I read it though. It seems to me that the OP is too reliant on his knife for mundane activities like...putting batteries in a child's toy to use one of his examples.

That doesn't sound like in a pinch to me. That sounds more like, "OH, I have a knife. Let me just use it for this task because I have the knife" as opposed to using his fingers which are deployed much more quickly!

The only thing I have ever used one of my knives for , other than cutting , was scraping clean several scanner/scales of gunk that would make a billy-goat puke ( were working at a meat processing plant calibrating their scales.) that was my Kershaw Chill.

This is why God invented $20 knives. Or was it the Chinese ? :D

If you want to use your knife as a pry bar or screw driver go ahead. Just don't complain if it breaks. If you want to borrow my knife to use as a pry bar I'll probably won't let you have it. Or I'll get very uptight if you damage it.

This. I don't care what you do with your knives, but you won't be doing it with mine.

I am going to use my hammer to comb my hair and then ill use a screwdriver to butter my bread right after i use my knife to pull up some nails.....see where im going? use the tool for its intended purpose

this post smells like a troll attempt IMO

I don't think it's trolling.

Now, I have used my knife as a screwdriver in a pinch, so I bought a Leatherman.

Given the OP has 26 posts, asks a trollish question and doesn't bother to post back to the thread, I'm with the troll callers.

Here - I use this as a screwdriver and a troll pruner...

As a mechanic I have found myself forced to use the "wrong" tools all the time...

:confused:Well, there is no way to know exactly what the OP meant. If you take it as meaning as always using as a prybar, screwdriver, etc., then, let's hope that he has plenty of knives. If he meant, ocasionally, as in an emergency, I think it has happened to all of us.

I don't know if "troll" is the appropriate term because there may not be any animosity involved. But I do think the OP has successfully jerked a few chains.

Pardon me for not making myself clear. I don't use my knife for such purposes all the time, only when I find myself limited on options, e.g. if I'm away from home or my toolbox. And I don't abuse my Sebenza like this because I hardly even use it to cut with, let alone to pry with. I have not broken any knives yet because I try to keep the degree of 'abuse' within reason. I do not want to carry a SAK or a multitool because I feel it is not worth the pocket space just to be useful every once in a while. I prefer the elegance of just one blade. All this is probably blasphemy to all the afi's out there, but please, let's all stay classy.

If you want to, do it, don't let anyone tell you how to live your life. If it's been working for you thus far, then continue doing it.

Knives are tools not objects of worship. Tools get used and abused. I snapped the tip off my mini grip awhile back by prying with it. Yes I was abusing it but it was all I had at the time. I have broken numerous other tools by using and abusing them as well. Tools break. Just replace it and go on.
