I am not a knifemaker. But I am a knifeshaper. When I see a knife I like I print it out trace it on a knife or cleaver that I bought on sale etc and go to town on it. Sometimes the entire knife and handle is cut out of the blade of the donor knife and sent to machine shop to drill holes for handle. Other times I am able to utilize some or all of the donor handle. I have also shaped a knife of my own design based on stuff I see. I profile the edge using a homemade sharpener and wet dry with semi permanent adhesive so I can change the paper several dozen times before glue stops sticking. It takes a loooooong time but its therapeutic and cool to slowly watch the edge take shape.

At least I know That I havent ruined temper by overheating my edge:)

All you need is Carbide drill bits and a drill press to drill holes in harden steel. You don't need to send then to a machine shop.

Get yourself a flat file and attach it to your rod using a couple of hose clamps and you will speed things up considerably.
