Using sandpaper for sharpening?

I've read numerous post about using sandpaper for sharpening. With the paper mounted on glass, is it best to use a cutting motion (blade first) or a stroping motion (blade trailing) for a flat bevel (not convex)?

A stropping motion will let your sandpaper, polishing paper, and lapping films last longer than an edge-forward movement. Accidents happen. They happen most when you're on your last scrap of sandpaper. Unfortunately, all hand sharpening will be a little convexed no matter which direction your hands move, but the steadier everything is, the less convex it'll be.

*Fortunately*, all hand sharpening will be a little convexed, to help make the ideal perfect holy appleseed edge. You are blessed, give thanks. ;)
