I find myself doing this but it's a pain to scrub the knife really clean every time. what do you do?

I don't think I have ever used my EDC knife for food. We have knives here in the kitchen at the Powernoodle Compound, and as krazy as it may sound, the restaurants I eat at also provide utensils. I can't say that I would never use an EDC knife for food prep or eating, but it hasn't happened yet.

Honestly I use my knife for cutting tasks that are non food and food related on a daily basis. Obviously if the media I cut is rancid then no it wont be used to prep lunch. I eat on the job site that's ever changing. But day in and day out it cuts cardboard, opens qwikrete bags, cuts zip ties etc... and preps lunch with just a wipe of my shirt in between uses.

I think there's something to be said for a little bacteria/germs and ones immune system---it ain't all bad ;)

It always puzzles me when I see a post about someone using their (sometimes tacticool) folding knife in their home for food prep. I get wanting to have an excuse to cut something, but getting food near a folding mechanism unnecessarily seems kinda icky. Also a fantastic excuse for buying a fancy gyuto. ;)

When I'm out and about, yes. At home, no, I have other sharp pointy items for that. I do try to clean between uses though. A simple wipe down, maybe some soap and water too

I use my camp knife for preparing meat all the time. Works like a charm. I just give it a good soapy hot water bath first. Beats the heck out of my kitchen knives for dicing steak and chicken breast, and specifically quartering cabbage.

I used my 0350 to eat steak a couple times. Usually after it went through the dishwasher. :D Only because I could though.

My EDC sees the most disgusting stuff you can imagine, no way I would put it anywhere near food.

Gotta admit.....I do it all the time.

I work in underground pipeline construction these days. My knife gets used to open bags of mortar/concrete, strip wire, dig in the mud, scrape pipe, split redwood blocks, etc....and yes, I wipe it down and have been known to cut food with it. Probably not the best idea in the world, but I don't have table with utensils or a break room, or a catering truck. We eat in the trenches so that's how it goes. Cancer will get me before the germs do ;)

I've often wondered of the hygiene of using the fixed blade you just battoned through old wet firewood with to cut your meals after and stuff like that. Or the knife you used to shave arm hair, cut up boxes, tape, loose strands, and has been in your sweaty lint filled pocket all day to eat your food and just "wiping it off". Do you just wipe off plates afterwards too? How about dropping a lollipop on the floor of the local barber? Wiping it off makes everything better right?

Only time I use a folder in the kitchen is help get a patina started. If I have no new carbon steels, then I use my kitchen knives. They're just so much better suited to the task.

I edc a Dragonfly 2 or a Chaparral. Small blades I wouldnt let near food for fear of gumming up the works. So its a non-issue for me. Now, when camping, sure...I use my fixed blade camp knife for everything...whittle some wood, then use for food prep. Why not? I just give the blade a wipe with a moist tissue after woodcraft and Im good to go with the spuds. :D

We came from the dirt. Gosh, let's not get prissy here; it's no big deal to wash a knife-blade.

Don't we all re-use kitchen knives after cutting up chicken??? Oh no...we might get salmonella poisoning!!! :barf:

That's what antibacterial soap is for....right???

What he said. It aint gonna hurt 'ya.
I live out in the country, and i can tell you right now, that our bodies fight off alot of stuff that alot of people worry about.

This above!!!!

Antibacterial soap is bad don't use it. It contributes to creating superbugs that are resistant to penicillin.

I remember I used a kitchen knife a few times to do some not-quite-kitchen stuff: when I was a boy. A lot has changed since then: like I have accumulated a lot of knives, and tools too!
And I can not really see myself using my edc knife to prepare food. I EDC folders: if folders were designed for food preparation they would have fixed blades and look like kitchen knives!
