I have a question for those using Whitetail Deer antler for handle material but first I should say that in this case I plan to use a piece about 1" long as a spacer between the brass guard of a hidden tang knife and a piece of stabilized Walnut as the main handle material. Does this short piece of antler need to be stabilized as I do when I use the antler for the main handle?

Thanks in advance!

I don't use white tail but I haven't been stabilizing elk antler.

Thank you. Yes, it can be stabilized. I don't know that I would use non-stabilized Whitetail for a hidden tang main handle. I just don't have a stabilized short piece right now, only scales.

Thanks, Kuraki. I think Whitetail antler is supposed to be pretty pithy in the center so I make sure I use it stabilized. I don't know anything about elk since we don't have many in South Carolina. lol

You can place the 1" piece in a old pill bottle or plastic bag and stabilize it by applying thin CA repeatedly for several days. Let cure well and grind away the bottle, bag. I use bulk CA and actually soak the antler in a pill bottle of it. After a few days, I take it out and let cure.

You can also drill out the pith and fill with epoxy and then fit to your tang
