USMC Field Tarp

Some of us are proud of our service. Stupidity isn't confined to just officers, I can tell you that from personal experience.

Don't misunderstand me, I've been on both sides and you're absolutely correct...stupidity is an equal opportunist as well:D I've had my fun with butter bars and then had to tolerate the same abuse when I was one. Having a thick skin and the ability to enjoy a little humor goes a long way...it has for me and continues even in my current life-sucking staff toilet-bowl position:eek:

One thing to note about this type of tarp is it's fire resistance. I have another that is similar and although I haven't dropped any coals on it to find out, it's handled stray sparks and floating ashes quite well...better than sil-nylon. These types of tarps would be much better suited to setting up closer to an open fire...just a consideration and something I don't do with my sil-tarps.

I would like one.

Miss my shelter half, just don't touch the insides during the rain.

Would see if Siagon Sams in Jacksonville NC has them yet.

Semper Fi,

I picked up the one off Ebay...roughly $45...brandnew and quick delivery. Hard to pass up a deal like that! I'll need to get it put up this weekend. It is a heavier material...much like the BCUSA tarp and Survival Solution's Swack Shack tarp; fire retardent. That's a good feature if you're actually setting up a shelter near a fire as opposed to Sil-nylon.

The tarp looks like the one the Brits and Aussies have had for a long time. I got one from a friend who worked with the Brit SAS back in about 1978, and it made an excellent shelter. Nice to see they are finally showing up in our armed forces. John

I was thinking it looks a lot like what we call a hootchie, or I think the poms call a basha. The Kiwis have one in their cam, looks a lot like english DPM to my eyes, that's a bit bigger than the Aussie hootchie, but they get a lot more of that water from the sky stuff...:)

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered the same one yesterday. We will see what it is all about. Would have liked to order two to snap together for larger shade and rain protection. I suppose you could create a matchcoat out of it for some raingear or extra warmth.

moving onto the Tarp, while it's an improvement from shelter halves, it's no pot'o'gold either. For what it is it's heavy and bulky, but it works like it's supposed to
I consider any improvement from a shelter half to be a "pot'o'gold". Talk about heavy and bulky.

These are available at some military surplus stores, specially those that are near USMC bases. (i.e. Camp Pendlton) We where issued these when I was in Field Med school in Camp Pendlton, funny though, because they don't call it tarps but ponchos. Although we where not allowed to use it as a tent, (we have the extreme weather sleeping bags, to use as "shelters" for cold and wet mornings) we use it to cover our packs, to keep our stuff dry. This tarp works great for keeping things dry, and it can also double as a water/dew collector.

Follow up. I got my USMC field tarp quickly. First impression out of the package. Very nice. Strong, quiet, nice pattern, well made. Strong bungee cords attached. The tarp had original tag on it. Wish I had ordered two. A friend ordered one after seeing mine. We will see how they look together. On the downside, The backing on one of the snaps was missing. They are plastic snaps and could be the weak link on the tarp. I have never had a snap fail on my military ponchos. Weight is not bad and it rolls up nice. I had a pant leg left over from some military pants with the draw string and I put the tarp in it with plenty of room for some extras. Aluminum stakes, 50 feet of paracord for a ridge line, green catfishing trout line for the tie outs, and am adding some tarp clips. The whole roll was compressed down with ranger bands. I could have used the bungee cords but I wanted the ranger bands in the package. Nice product, I would buy another. Regards

Would you mind emailing me where you got yours? I'd like to pick one up. Thanks!

I got mine off Ebay. The person I got mine from has pulled his offer down. I bet they get more. There are other people selling them.
