Hi All,

I recently shipped a hawk in a tube (about 16" long) using 1st class mail service with signature confirmation #.
I opted for 1st class since in my experience it's a very reliable service and takes only 2-3 days longer to deliver compared with the more expensive priority mail.
It went out on the 19th and was supposed to make it to destination on the 27th.
Well, I just checked the tracking # and it's not there yet....and tracking only shows "in transit".
Mail man couldn't track it either. He thinks it's possible it didn't get scanned because of the tubular shape of the package and the scanners missed the bar code ....is that possible?
So far looks like it's gone missing.

Anyone had a similar experience? What are my options here?
I know I can file a claim 30 days after it was shipped...but hope it's not gonna come to this.
And I'm not sure how that can help, since it wasn't insured.

I had one priority box lost for 2 weeks last winter, probably due to snow storms, but it finally showed up. I called a USPS service center, that I believe was in Kansas City, MO. The supervisor was helpful and encouraging, after he saw that other boxes going through the same transit centers were also delayed. He predicted that it would be delivered, and it arrived within a day or two, after we spoke. I was able to file an online claim, after about 10 days. I do not believe that you actually have to wait the 30 days. My claim was later refused, due to the package being delivered.

Yeah, but that was due to the snow storms....nothing like that in my case.
What's really weird, it shows departure scan from the post office in my city, than nothing....no scans anywhere else.

I filled a form on-line at usps.com, got a call back from a post office rep. He said to give it a couple more weeks, and I can't file a claim before 30 days from the date of shipping. He also confirmed that he has no clue of what happen to the parcel....disarming honesty on his side.

Most mail gets hauled around in mailbags, and if the mailbag isn't carefully emptied at its destination, the bag gets rolled up and sent to be used again, and the mail in the bottom can be "lost" for a while. Very sloppy procedure and we used to get told about it, too. But it shows up the next time the bag is used. This accounts for most mysterious disappearances.

It will probably get there ....eventually. I have had packages tour most of the USA, but have never lost one.

I recently sent a package to Medford OR. It seems to be taking a tour of the entire west coast. :D

I was expecting a package (UNXLD) the Friday before last and the tracking said it was stuck in Oregon for 4 days and the Voila,it was here on Monday and the tracking still remained in Oregon.

Thanks all. You are right, the package showed up almost 4 weeks later.
To sum up: be patient and have faith in USPS :D

As far as just delivery goes USPS Priority is a great value above UPS ground but below Fedex ground. USPS is by far the worst if the package/knife is worth anything $$ & lost or damaged & you need to file claim. Good luck. UPS is getting nearly as bad at paying claims fairly.FedEx by far the best at covering any goofs. USPS is great $ value until they screw up & you try & file claim on a knife esp a automatic $$ or custom $$. Just sayin .. Learned from exp of tons of shipping from all the carriers.
