USPS damaged my khukuri

They didn't drop your package, Shao...

..They probably drop-kicked it a few times....

Be prepared for a battle as the USPS does NOT like to grant insurance claims. They will make it very hard. Be a persistent pest and it'll work out fine.

As far as the chip goes....if you get a refund, just buy a new one.

Keep the chipped handle khuk as your "beater"...:D

Hey, their motto is that they will go through all sorts of rain, sleet, snow, or steaming heat to get your package to it's destination, they never said it would be in good condition....... LOL! ;)

I know, it really sucks, but sometimes one can only laugh (the option being to cry) :(

I always loved the undercover film of USPS employees in the parking lot outside a Philidelphia US Mail building drinking vodka from the bottle in their cars.
Actualy, I don't care if they drink, but those that start hording caches of mail should be caught. Really weird. Work for the service awhile and some of them start stockpiling mail in their houses, autos, etc

You can probably make nests out of mail, little cardboard houses out of khuk boxes....

oh yeah, if you can, take pictures of everything, highest resolution, good lighting. get prints. submit the print with a formal letter, documentation, everything.

resist turning in your item for "inspection", resist handing over the shipping box. keep everything as long as possible. for sure, they'll lose or misrepresent things if you hand them over *especially* without pictures, you'll have no recourse. by submitting pictures early, they'll know they can't just lose and abuse you. "gosh, the box you submitted showed no such failures, rips/etc. it must've been shipped damaged, not our issue"...

also, the next package you get from yangdu, photograph it and unpack it slowly, and photograph that. show how well she does. that might be useful if they try the "wasn't packed well"; they will try. you can show them that subsequent packages were packed by a professional.

try also to resist taking any lesser amount from them. they might try to pro-rate the damage in some way. this isn't a car that you can take to a ding shop, it must be *professionally restored* ;) as it's a "one of a kind" ;) item ;* *nudge nudge wink wink*. which is true.

key phrase "you want to be made whole". item cost (or repair in full) + shipping + letter of apology and/or reassurance that they will not do this again ;) make them think you are serious and not just whining! :>

good luck, and at least you know your tax dollars are at work :)

Oh my god!
I had no idea that it was that much of a hassle to make a claim with the USPS!

Man, that just plain ole sucks! :(

I hope Shao gets a break from them, and does not get the run-a-round.

I've had one arrive which might have fit the "finger hole that grew theory" - I think it was my first or at least one of my first. Luckily there was no damage.

If you want to see really, belligerant, malicious damage, I'll show pictures of what FedEx freight did to a kevlar sea kayak....

EDIT - I've always been happy with the quality and thoroughness of my packages...sometimes to the point of frustration. :) Dan and Bwray seem to have picked up the habit as things I received from them has been super-wrapped as well.

I've had some NON HI knives poorly wrapped and rattling around in the box before. Imagine if someone sent a khuk that way and the lazy ass shipping workers used that finger hole technique. They may have to open the package to retreive their finger! ;)

Thanks for the advice everyone. As usual, you've all been a great help. Fortunately, it now looks as though my encounter with the USPS insurance inspectors will be put on indefinite hold, as Yangdu has notified me that she will go through the insurance process for me! She's sending me a replacement! I'd heard about HI's customer service and now I've experienced it first hand. Just awesome. :D

The finger-hole news is a bit disturbing. The hole is perfectly sized for a lazy postal worker's dirty little finger to slide into. I've been moved to write a formal letter to whoever's in charge to let them know what's going on. If anyone had any stories to contribute, I'll compile them with my own before sending. There's just no excuse for that kind of behavior. Anyway, it will have to wait until my girlfriend goes home, since I don't want to rush it. I want to get my point across in the most articulate and effective manner possible. Maybe the impudent sods will reap the punishment they deserve for defiling our khukuris.

That's awesome! I had a feeling that she would take care of you. Seems that all the talk about great HI customer service is more than true

given that more than a few knives aren't as well wrapped, let alone have sheaths, and are shipped with the hope and prayer that the box is the only thing keeping the knife in ... except maybe a cardboard sleeve... that finger trick is only going to get someone missing a finger soon. there's no call for them to penetrate and violate a package. how do they know what's in it?

but don't wait too long on telling them your opinion and registering a complaint, they'll just ignore it.
