To cut a long story short, Oct 31 a $450 radio was shipped from Arizona to my house via priority mail (2-3 business days). Well, its Nov 11 and I still dont have my radio.

I've talked to the head of my local post office, but she said there is not much she can do. Is there some code phrase or magic lamp I can rub to get my radio to appear on my porch?

What is the tracking information saying? I would probably go through amazon before the post office. Have you tried that?

The tracking information still says its in Arizona. I ordered from a person, not a company.( hes a custom radio builder and I know him, he has a live bench cam and I watched him pack it up and put the label on it). It was shipped and I received a shipping notice. Since then the notice has never updated on its status.

My bad, I read "amazon" instead of "Arizona".
Watching him pack it and print the label doesn't prove that he mailed it out. A shipping notice is sent automatically as soon as an online label is printed. It could have been packed and labeled on camera then kept in his house.
It sounds like you trust the guy, so assuming he did ship the package he needs to do some digging. It's his responsibility to see that it's delivered to you.
If you paid with PayPal keep an eye on the time limit to file a claim.
I hope it works out for you.

I will have him look into it on his end. I trust this guy, so I'm looking at the UPS right now. I payed cash for the radio, and that was a few months ago (hes rather back logged). I watched him work on it and lable it, and he said he shiped it already. I'll just ahve to wait to see what he turns up then.

I would have figured there was something I could have done to help. But I guess I just have to wait.

Does the tracking indicate if it was accepted by the PO or dispatched to a sorting center? Or does it merely say something like "electronic shipping info received"? In the latter case, a label has been printed but the radio has not been received by the PO (normal circumstances, though I have seen that never being updated even though I received a package).

I would be worried at this point since 10 days is a bit too much for priority, and have the shipper ask his local PO.

Ok, I got a few emails from them. First one was the label (just saying it was made...). Next was that the PO had received it. Next was that it had arrived and shipped out of Phoenix and was out for delivery (or something like that). It was received on Nov2 and was scheduled to be delivered the 4th. Now I live in Georgia, so 2 or 3 days is more than plenty of time for it to get to me. But the way the days landed (weekends and this holiday) I figured I've give it some time. The tracking site still has it listed as shipped from Phoenix and is due to be delivered by the 4th.

I apologize mods, I thought the feedback was for knife related stuff only. Thanks for the move.

According to the USPS site, insured mail which includes priority mail is not considered lost until 21 days, that is the minimum amount of time to file a claim. The maximum time allowed to file a claim is 180 days from the date of shipment.

Info is taken from the USPS domestic and international claim form PS1000.

I had a package I shipped priority to the Boston area get stuck at a post office for about a month, I was ready to reimburse the buyer(who was very patient) and it randomly showed up. More commonly I get a delivered update to the tracking info and the package doesn't show up for several more days.

Shipping sometimes gets REALLY screwy. I traded with a guy in Hawaii and his knife got to me in 3 days... and mine took over 2 weeks to get to him. Apparently his was sent by boat, and mine was tied to a life jacket and chucked from the shore. I have also had a few packages that arrived at my local office and sit there for a few days for no reason before they are delivered. I have also had a first class package make it across the country in a day, and had priority take over a week.

Basically USPS is like shooting two 6-sided dice, and 2 and 12 are free spins on the problem wheel. They usually don't happen, but when they do...

I had a knife leave Wisconsin and arrive in Des Moines, Iowa the next day. 63 days later, it arrived at my post office with absolutely no documentation in the tracking page at all. It may have been jarred loose by my PO guy asking someone or it might have been my bitchy yet polite email to the postal system asking about when the monkeys were gonna quit playing with the football and get to work.
